"Bill" Riley, 89, 901 Walnut Street, Hollidaysburg, formerly of 208 W. 1st Street, Clearfield, died Wednesday, March 28, 2007 at Altoona Regional Health System, Altoona Hospital Campus. He was born September, 7 1917 in Washington DC, son of the late Wallace W. and Julia (Bifield) Riley. He married Marie Wolf on April 10, 1944 in San Francisco. He was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Lakemont, former member of St. Francis Catholic Church, Clearfield. Bill worked for the Union Trust Bank, Washington DC. He then enlisted in the United States Navy from 1942-1945, serving in the Pacific Theatre with the amphibious forces and participated in the Guadal Canal Campaign and Tinian and Saipan Invasions. Following his military service he worked for the Wolf Furniture Company from 1945-1983 in a variety of managerial capacities, serving as the Clearfield store manager from 1948-1972, then becoming a regional supervisor from 1972-1983. Bill had served on the Clearfield Borough Council as a Council Member and past President, served on the board of directors of the Shaw Public Library, Clearfield, and was a very active supporter of St. Francis Catholic Church and School in Clearfield. Bill was also active in the Adult Literacy Programs of the Clearfield and Blair County Prisons. He had an interest in conservation and land preservation with a great love for Irish Pines Tree Farm/Eden Hill where he was honored as tree farmer of the year in 1993. Bill enjoyed staying fit, painting, birdwatching, gardening, reading, music, and playing bridge. He was a graduate of Gonzaga High School, Washington DC and the Columbus Law School, Washington DC. He is survived by his wife, Marie, and eight children, Marie R. Little and husband John P. of Hollidaysburg, Betsy Davis and husband Terry of Olney MD, Dorothea (Doss) Riley of Rockville, MD, W. Anthony Riley and wife Jeanne Murray of Baltimore, MD, George W. Riley of Hollidaysburg, Charles W. W. Riley and wife Susan Bailor of Woodbury, Julia Philips of Rockville MD, and Rachel Rist and husband Patrick of Bon Aqua, TN. All the children were raised in Clearfield. He is also survived by twenty grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren and a brother Alfred Riley of Kensington, MD. Bill was preceded in death by a brother Rev. Charles Riley S.J. Friends will be received from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Friday at the Stevens Mortuary, 1421 8th Avenue, Altoona, PA 16602. Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Lakemont by Father Mark Begley. Committal prayers will be held at Calvary Cemetery, Clearfield at 4 p.m. Saturday.
