Stahl is Claimed by Reaper Another Early Resident of DuBois Joins Passing Procession of Pioneers, in 82nd Year On Monday the name of another of those older citizens who came to DuBois in the very early days of the community was added to the very heavy toll of pioneers that has been taken recently by the Grim Reaper, when William M. Stahl passed away at his home on Garfield avenue, in his 82nd year. He was the fourth person who came to this community more than sixty years ago to pass away within a week, others being Peter A. Johnson, Elisha Evans and Mrs. Sophia Barr. Mr. Stahl came to DuBois in the spring of 1872, soon after the first DuBois party arrived here to establish the town of DuBois. He had been born on a farm two miles south of Indiana on April 1, 1854, and spend his early life there until he reached the age of 18, when he joined the new lumbering settlement, entering into employment of John DuBois as a head woodsman. After many years in the woods and later at the Big Mill in this city, he took a position with the DuBois & Van Tassel Tannery and continued with that concern until it went out of operation. He followed building trades for a few years and in 1907 entered into the employ of the municipality of DuBois, where he continued until he retired four years ago. He was attached chiefly to the street department and for a time under the old borough form of government he officiated as superintendent of the streets. Mr. Stahl had been an active and robust man until Saturday, August 31, when he was stricken ill and failed rapidly, his condition having been serious several years ago and his death ensuing at 11:45 o'clock Monday morning. The deceased is survived by his widow, one son, George B. Stahl, of DuBois, and two daughters, Mrs. E.E. Mood, of Berwick, and Mrs. Charles Traister, of Buffalo. Six grandchildren also survive. Funeral services will be held from the bereaved home on Garfield avenue on Thursday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock and burial will be made in the Rumbarger Cemetery.
