The Coalport News furnishes the following account of a fatal accident: "It is with regret that we note the death of one of our most industrious citizens, Mr. Nathan A. Swope, which occurred on Tuesday between 10 and 11 o'clock. He was at work in Irvona mine No. 1, when caught by a fall of perhaps a ton of rock, which fell on him and crushed his body across the hips, and broke his back. He was extricated from his awful position as speedily as his fellow workmen could remove the massive stone that had him pinned firmly to the ground. He was removed to his home in this town but died before reaching there. He spoke after the accident and said he could not live. He was aged 38 years and 23 days, and leaves a widow and four sons to mourn his untimely death. Morning Tribune, Altoona, Pa., Thursday, December 18, 1890
