John was the last survivor of a family of three boys and two girls. His family was of strong and intellectual fiber and the youth received a college education and training at DuBlin, Ireland. In 1854 John came to Philadelphia and took up the occupation of ship builder. During the Civil War he served in the Construction arm of the service for the North. In 1872 he came to Clearfield Co. and in 1878 was married to Esther Ann Furney. Afterwards he lived at Sabula or near by. Eight children were born of this marriage, Lena, Mrs. Perey Clyde, Mary, deceased, Arthur, Victoria, Isaac, John, deceased, Agnes and Beatrice. The deceased was a man of much intelligence and force of character, industrious, energetic and vigorous in all things. He had membership in the Order of Free Masons. The funeral was held from the Hickory Methodist church on Sunday July 21. The interment was in the Conoway Cemetery.
