Lock Haven, Clinton Co., Pennsylvania Friday, October 3, 1913 Flemington Gossipers have had a real busy time lately discussing the stay here of a man who gave his name as J. S. Reese and is said to be from Altoona. He came here several weeks ago claiming to be a government detective and found lodging with the widow of the late John Chatham, whose maiden name was Ellen Styers. Mrs. Chatham is drawing a widow's pension. Reese made the claim to the woman that his business was to look after soldiers' widows and see that they were protected. He hung his hat on a peg and gave his undivided attention to Mrs. Chatham's affairs and not only saw that she received her stipulated amount from Uncle Sam, but was so intensely interested that he kept right on the job and saw to it that the money was spent and in fact became not only a regular boarder, but assumed command of the household, to the utter disgust of Mrs. Chatham's daughter, who swore out a warrant for the arrest of the cheeky imposter and he is now in the county jail awaiting the action of the court. Additional Comments: Ellen Styers was the daughter of Nicholas & Sarah Styers. She married John Chatham about 1881. John Chatham (April 1830 - bef Oct 1913) enlisted as a Private on April 22, 1861 in Co. D, 15th Penn Infantry Regiment through August 8, 1861. He then enlisted as a Private on October 7, 1861 with Co. G, 58th Penn Infantry Regiment. On November 16, 1864 he was promoted to Full Sergeant. He was discharged on January 24, 1866.
