The deceased, a native of France, was a veteran of the Civil War and served in a company of the 45th Regiment Penna Volunteer Infantry, and had a splendid record as a soldier. He inherited that quality from his great-grandfather Major John Phillip DeHaas, who settled in Beech Creek at the close of the Revolutionary War on land granted to him as an officer in the Colonial Army. The deceased was the father of the first wife of our townsman Wm. F. Kintzing, and the grandfather of Barnes Kintzing and Miss Mabel DeHaas Kintzing, a teacher in the local schools.
