SAMUEL GARMAN A Well Known Resident of South Renovo Passes Away A Pioneer Jeweler of the West Branch Valley Mr. Samuel Garman, the well-known jeweler, died at his home in South Renovo, Wednesday evening, the 17th inst., shortly after 7 o'clock, aged 77 years and 5 days. Mr. Garman had been complaining of ill health for some time, but was able to be about, and took entire charge of his business affairs until within two weeks of his death. Mr. Garman was born in Harrisburg, April 12, 1824, and in his youth learned the watchmaking trade in the establishment of George J. Heisley, of that city, one of the best watchmakers of his time. In later years this distinction was also conferred upon Mr. Garman, of whom it was said there was no better watchmaker. On January 23, 1845, he was married to Miss Mary Ann Platt, of Dauphin county. Some time afterwards they came to Williamsport, Pa., and he established himself in the jewelry and watchmaking business, in which he prospered and became one of the most prominent businessmen of that city, honored and respected by all who knew him. About twenty-four years ago he came to Renovo and started in business. For a number of years he resided in this place, but moved his family to South Renovo, about the year 1886. Though having passed the allotted age of man, Mr. Garman was active and observing to a remarkable degree. He was a man of bright intellect, and was an extensive reader. He was known to almost every person in Renovo and South Renovo, and highly respected by all. He was of a generous and friendly disposition, a good, charitable citizen and a kind neighbor. His aged figure and pleasant greetings will be greatly missed on our streets. He is survived by his aged widow, who has been in feeble health for some time; also by three sons, George, William and Samuel Garman, and a widowed daughter, Mrs. Alice Fox, who resided with him, and by one grandson, Samuel Garman, of South Renovo, and three great grandchildren. One brother, Mr. Daniel Garman, founder of the Garman House, Bellefonte, Pa., also survives him. One son, Jacob Garman, preceded him to the grave some years ago. The funeral will take place on Saturday afternoon at 1 o'clock. Services will be held at his late residence, and will be conducted by Rev. J.D. Cook, pastor of the Presbyterian church. Interment will be made in Fairview cemetery. This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.org/pafiles/ File size: 2.9 Kb
