Jacob Givler, who was well-known down the Juniata valley, died at Renovo on the 8th inst. He was born in Cumberland county in September, 1812. In 1831 he married Miss Rachael Jones, of Juniata county, and settled in Huntingdon county, where he was employed as foreman for the State Canal Company. He remained in the service of the State until the contract was let for building the Pennsylvania railroad, when he was awarded a sub-contract to build part of a section of railroad at Newton Hamilton. After its completion he was employed by the Pennsylvania Railroad Company as a gang boss. Among his old papers is a pass dated "April 15, 1851, to himself and hands between Perrysville and Huntingdon." In 1853 he was promoted to conductor of a gravel train. The same year he moved to Patterson, and continued in the service of the company as conductor until the year after the civil war broke out - 1862 - when he went to Nashville, Tenn., and served as conductor for the United States government for nine months. Upon his return from Nashville he moved to Huntingdon and was employed as conductor of a freight train on the Huntingdon and Broad Top railroad. In the spring of 1865, he moved to Renovo, and was employed as yard dispatcher. Last February he received a second stroke of paralysis, and from that time has declined rapidly. For twenty-five years he was a member of the Independent Order of Red Men. Peace to his ashes. Morning Tribune, Altoona, Pa., Saturday, July 17, 1880
