McALLESTER, merchant, Mount Holly Springs, was born in Perry County, Penn., August 13, 1841, son of Alexander and Elizabeth (Baughman) McAllester, natives, respectively, of Dauphin and Perry Counties, Penn.; the former of Scotch-Irish and the latter of German origin. Alexander McAllester, who was a blacksmith by trade, in later life a farmer, died in Perry County, Penn., in 1880. Our subject is the seventh born in a family of nine children, seven of whom grew to manhood and womanhood. He was reared on the farm, receiving his education in the common school and in Bloomfield Academy. His first business venture was as a clerk in a dry goods store in Logansport, Ind., where he remained six years; he then went East and clerked for two years; subsequently embarked in mercantile trade at Mount Holly Springs, where he has since successfully conducted a general store. D. A. McAllester was married, in 1868, to Emma, daughter of Jacob Steel, and of German origin. They have five children: C. J., Steel, William, D. A. and Marie. Mr. McAllester is a Democrat in politics. He was appointed postmaster in 1885, and has served as treasurer of Mount Holly Springs. He is a member of the K. of P.
