He became a member of the board of directors and assistant to Carl, the president and general manager of the plant. He also helped his sister, Hazel Naugle Myers, start the M&N restaurant. Ed then was instrumental in opening the first self-service grocery store in Shippensburg. Four years later, he sold that store and opened Naugle Motors in 1945. It was the first Dodge dealership in Shippensburg. His sons, William and Richard, joined him in running the business. Today it is run by William Jr.'s sons, Robert and William III. Ed was instrumental in many other enterprises in Shippensburg. When the adolescents needed a place to gather, he got a room at the American Legion, and the Teen Canteen was born. He also served for 25 years on the Shippensburg Recreation and Park Commission, the last 11 of which as chairman. In the 1960's, Ed decided Shippensburg needed a good bowling alley, and built what is now called Park Lanes in 1964. Besides owning the establishment, he was a pretty good bowler, carrying an average in the 180's during the 1970's. Ed was president of the Lion's Club for a while, president of the Community Chest for a year, and a Sunday school superintendent at the Methodist Church, where he was very active. He was a very successful businessman, as well as someone who, when he saw a need, figured out how to meet it. Ed made significant contributions to his community. (This information from an article in the Shippensburg New Chronicle on the occasion of Ed's 93rd birthday in May 1994.)
