Thompson. The Cumberland County cemeteries are in Vol 17. Thanks to Carolyn Shearer for extracting this information. Special thanks to Charlee Wilson for painstakingly editing the work from scanned images of volumes on microfilm. The journals are now in the possession of the Western PA Historical Society in Pittsburgh and are extremely fragile. Cemetery readings are partials of most cemeteries; they include additional data than other readings posted in these archives. Readings are as shown in the journal, and several of the larger cemeteries have several sections, which are not consecutive. You need to look through the file to get them all. Cemeteries include: Ashland Cemetery, Carlisle Old Grave Yard in Carlisle Meeting House Spring Graveyard Big Spring Presbyterian Cem Middle Spring Presbyterian Cem [old and new GY] Martin Carothers Graveyard, West Pennsborough Tp Newville Cemetery, Newton Tp Old Dickinson Church Graveyard, Cummingstown, Penn Tp Old Presbyterian Graveyard, Shippensburg Prospect Hill Cemetery, West Pennsborough Tp Spring Hill Cemetery, Shippensburg Tp Silver Spring Church Graveyard CUMBERLAND COUNTY CEMETERY RECORDS FROM THE JOURNALS OF JOSIAH V. See B 12 p 63 Leaving graveyard 6 PM We then went over to the church built in 1783 & from then until 1866, the front entrance was on side facing graveyard. In 1866 it was changed & faces the parsonage over the door is marble plate "Silver Spring Meeting House 1783" V17 Page 37 The stone in front 2d step up & on top is 18 ft long 3 1/2 ft wide & 11 inches thick. The old communion set is in a case which was originally their first musical instrument, a melodion. The ceiling in the main room is 22 to 25 ft high. We then went in the chapel erected by Col Henry & Mrs Annie McCormick of Hbg, Pa. The tablet on the wall reads "This building is erected in memory of Mary Cameron McCormick who died June 3, 1882 aged 8 yrs by her father & mother Henry & Annie C. McCormick as in life she found her great delight in Sunday School Associations so in death, it is fitting that she should be thus remembered. Being dead yet speaketh Hebrews 11:4 Henry & James McCormick had a sister, Mary who married U.S. Senator J. Donald Cameron, the mother of Miss Mary Cameron, living near Carlisle, Pa & doing so much good helpful uplifting work here. When the old log church was torn down 1783, some of the original poplar logs went into the building of Peter Fornay's barn & later used in Geo Hoover's barn from which they were sawed V17 Page 38 into narrow boards which were used in base of the pulpit in the chapel. They also have the first communion table, the boards primed together, not nailed, which is in strong firm condition. Rev Charles Beatty preached here at an early day appearing in the pulpit with two revolvers in his belt as a protection vs the Indians. [Ed note: Probably meant pistols as the revolver not yet invented when this event is reported to have taken place. cir 1760ish I would think.] We then went in the house, the manse & he introduced me to his wife's sister, Miss Ailsa Carothers Ewalt, a large handsome, sweet faced woman & his daughter, his wife being away from home. Miss Ewalt says her great great grandfather, John Carothers was a captain in the Revolutionary War & is buried here & his wife Ailsa was a McTeer. She & her niece gave me their ancestral line as follows: 1st Generation William Caruthers b 1715 ob Nov 15, 1762. This is younger half brother of gggf Joe Carithers. Jean Caruthers, his wife b 1711, ob Dec 11, 1783. 2d Generation, Capt John Carothers B June 1744, ob Jany 11, 1782 Ailsie McTeer. 3d Generation, John Carothers B Oct 15, 1781 ob Mch 5, 1811. Martha Quigley B July 11, 1786 ob Oct 24, 1828. See page 97. When I got this far, copying the record, Miss Ferguson said she would type both papers which she did & which I will enter later in this book. She did V17 Page 39 however, give me a genealogical table as long as this book opened out which I will also record & which I am to return to Rev Dr Thos J. Ferguson, Mechanicsburg, Pa. Miss Ailsie Carothers Ewalt says her grandmother Jane Carothers Oliver (daughter of John 1781-1811 line 29 preceding page) always spoke of Mary (Polly) Carothers who was poisoned as her Aunt says John Carothers was an Uncle of her grandmother, Jane Oliver. This could not be as her father was John. She said later that Mary (or Polly) were not really her Aunt (Aug 24/26 John who was poisoned was a first cousin of Capt John gf of Jane O.) Miss Ewalt's mother nee Martha Oliver was born Jany 8, 1830 & died May 24, 1925, gave the data on the four pages of Carothers History which Miss F. copied for me. This information was given by her & written down sometime before Mrs Ewalt died in her 96th yr Matthew Louden married Elizabeth McCormick whose mother was a Carruth (of our Caruthers line). She was Miss E's great great grandmother. Their son Archibald Louden married Margaret Bines & their daughter, Margaret Louden married Henry Ewalt & their son V17 Page 40 William Henry Ewalt married Martha Oliver [NOTE: The name Louden as noted in this text might be London. I can't be sure whether the letter as written is a U or an N] Ailsie Carothers' mother when she came here to Silver Spring Church changed the name of her daughter at the Baptismal fount from Ailsie to Alsetta Carothers & she later married Thomas Bines Bryson, both of whom I saw at Mechanicsburg, Pa in July 1876. She was sister of Jane Carothers, grandmother of my informant. Jane Carothers was born in 1809 & 2 yrs later her sister Alsetta was born a posthumous child, her father dying before she was born. Their mother, nee Martha Quigley was a widow awhile & then married Wm Orr, who lived on a nearby farm & had six children by him. She says these two were the only children by John Carothers. My records show more. See or write Miss Ewalt & ask if the other children I name might be the Orr children. Their was a John Carothers, a first cousin of Jane & Alesetta, son of William, whose wife was "Polly" Matchett. See page 27, lines 17 to 27 incl. An old aunt Elizabeth Matchett cared for John who was weak minded & only son. He is buried here & has a marker. He never V17 Page 41 married, was aged 20 or more, I think he was an only child. Look here for will of James Neal. Leaving 7:44 PM On the road in 7:50 PM Thos A. Carothers says Mrs Lenore Flowers at No 166 W. Pomfret St nee Dunbar is a Caruthers descendant. Her husband is in the P.O. at Hbg. She is in her 40s & was seeking inf about the Andrew Carothers line. See her. Also see Miss Mary H. Colwell. As we came in, T.A.C. pointed out a big stone house on the right hand side of the road just before we reached Hogestown as we went out which was on the old John & Mary Carothers farm where they were poisoned. Rev Ferguson says the McCormicks own the land nearby on which their pioneer ancestor settled & bought from the Penns, which I believe was 1745. Miss Ewalt sd her mother or grandmother used to speak of one of their relatives, Jesse Carothers, who went west. Make further inquiries of where he came in. Suppose it was hardly our Jesse, but believe it must have been V17 Page 42 From page 26 No 10. Ctd. buried with military honors. The Penna Assembly 1821-1822 granted a pension to Molly McKolly (or McCauley) for services rendered. This monument is erected by the com of Penna June 28, 1916. Commissioners: Roy L. Schuyler, Chairman, Herman A. Miller, Vice Chm, Wm S. Wacker Treas, Wm A. Rupp Secy. Mary Ludwig Hays (Molly Pitcher) accompanied her husband during his service in the Continental Army & rendered valuable service in the capacity of an army nurse & by reason of her many acts of kindness, became known throughout the army from the oft repeated expression "Here comes Molly & her pitcher" as "Molly Pitcher" At the battle of Monmouth, June 28, 1778, Sergeant John Hays was severely wounded & as he fell to the ground, Molly sprang to the cannon he had been serving, which cannon had been ordered to the read, but before the gun could be withdrawn, she had taken her husband's place & rendered such valiant service that Genl George Washington, after the battle thanked her personally for her bravery & heroic action". In the center of back is Coat of Arms of Pa & above to left thereof & to right is: V17 Page 43 "Molly Pitcher" (Mary Hays) O'er Monmouth's field of Carnage drear with cooling drink & words of cheer A Woman of Hays, the Gunner with ramrod from her husband's hand Beside his gun, she took her stand And helped to wrest our well loved land From England's tyrant King. From the ranks this woman came By the cannon won her fame 'Tis true she could not write her name But Feedom's hand has carved it Shall we then criticise her ways Nay, rather give her well earned praise Then doff our caps & voices raise In cheers for Molly Pitcher Sarah Woods Parkinson" Tombstone over the grave says: "Mollie McCauley renowned in History as Mollie Pitcher the heroine of Monmouth died Jany 1832 aged 79 yrs (age here evidently wrong) Erected by the Citizens of Cumberland Co July 4, 1876" V17 Page 44 Back in the OLD CEMETERY AT CARLISLE, Pa July 19, 1926 9 AM Thos A. Caruthers says this graveyard was given to the town by the Penns for a graveyard to the public square to the county for a court house & the adjg ground for Market House & churches were all given for these express purposes only, by the Penns.
