On 6 January 1800 James was held in the sum of 20 pounds. Conditioned for his appearance to testify in behalf of the Commonwealth at the next session. James Hurley served from 5 June 1808 to 4 July 1813 in Captains Arbuckle's, Wilkinson's, Peyton's and Ware's Companies, Second United States Infantry, and from 4 July 1813 in Captains John Miller's and Joseph J. Miles Companies Second United States Infantry, and was discharged 10 April 1818 From the United States Infantry. 20 November 1818 James Hurley was given eight acres of land in Cumberland County Pennsylvania for his military service. (page 695 3rd series vol. 24 Pa. Archives). We do not know when either James Hurley actually began to reside in Pennsylvania. 1818-1820 James Hurley owned about 21 acres of mountain land and two horses and two cows. Mifflin Township Cumberland County tax record. 1820 James Hurley is in the Mifflin Township, Cumberland County Pennsylvania census. (four sons and two daughters). 1821 James Hurley is in the Cumberland County Septennial Census, listed as a farmer in Mifflin Township. (At Cumberland County Historical Society.) C-H-C96913 Cumb 1821. 1823 James Hurley is in Mifflin Township tax record. He had two horses and two cows. 1830 James Hurley is in Frankford Township census. 1830 James Hurley is in West Penn Township census. (Born 1801) 1835 James Hurley lived in Frankford Township and purchased fifty five acres of land in Mifflin Township at auction for sixty dollars and fifty cents. He being the highest bidder and that the highest and best price biden. (Deed 26 Sept 1835 vol. 1 Book QQ Pg 244). I'm not sure which James this was. (Born 1778 or 1801.) 1840 James Harley is in Mifflin Twp census. James Harley is in Newcumberland in the index but not in the census. (Harley) 1850 James Hurley is in the Mifflin Twp census. It says he was born in 1774 in Pennsylvania. 1850 James Hurley (born 1801) is in the Mifflin Twp census. (This census says James was born in Pennsylvania.) His son George was two years old in the 1850 census. George's ( Mason George ) family bible and his tombstone say he was born in 1852. The 1852 dates cannot be correct since he was already two years old in 1850. 1880 census says he was born in 1855. 1850 George Hurley (Dr. George.) is in the Mifflin Twp census. 24 September 1856 James Hurley Sr. and his wife Catherine sold 10 acres of land in Mifflin Twp for one hundred and ten dollars. (Deed vol. 8 book J page 210). This is part of the 55 acres bought at auction above. The deed says James Hurley Sr. 8 February 1867 James Hurley died. (Born 1778.) The 1850 and 60 census say he was born in Pennsylvania. 1870 James Hurley (born 1801) is in the Mifflin Twp census. The 1850, 60, 70 and 80 census, and several of his children's Death certificates say James was born in Pennsylvania. His son James Wesley's says James was born in England. 16 Sept 1862 Isaac Heffelfinger conveyed twenty three acres of land to James Hurley in trust for his sons James W., Samuel C. and William M. (minor children). Isaac was his twenty five year old neighbor in the 1860 census. 11 Oct 1872 James W. and Samuel C. and their wives conveyed their two thirds of this land to George A. Hurley. 17 Aug 1873 George A. Hurley sold his two thirds of this land to William M. Hurley who now owns it all, for two hundred dollars. George gave James and Catherine (Peck) Hurley their life estate on this property at this time. These three transactions are all in deed vol. 3 book G page 364 and 365. 1880 Catherine (Stump) Hurley died. James Hurley born in 1801 is in the 1880 census, it says both parents born in Penna. 1883-84-85 Mifflin Twp tax record James Hurley (born 1801) is now listed as James Sr. (He has a son James.) He owns one cow and a Carriage. His occupation is listed as an old gent. He is a tenant. 1886-87-88 Mifflin Twp tax record lists James Hurley Sr. as a tenant. ============== When the children of James Hurley Jr. died this is where their death certificate said James Jr. and Catherine Peck were born. No one that we are aware of knows where James Hurley or his son James Jr. were born. We don't know who the mother of James Jr. was. Mildred Hurley told this story. Her mother Cora Edna Barrick Hurley said that her Grandmother Agnes (Hurley) Grey told her that her Father (James Hurley Jr.) was born on a ship coming to America and that his Mother died in child birth and was buried at sea. It would be interesting to see where the death certificates for the other eight children of James and Catherine say their parents were born. Can anyone find a record of either James Hurley before April first 1799 when James Hurley witnessed a school being damaged in East Pennsborough Township, Cumberland County Pennsylvania ?
