Betty to William Miller This indenture made 4 Dec. 1776 between James Betty of Allen twp., Cumberland co., PA, yeoman, of the one part and William Miller of the city of Philadelphia, merchant, of the other part. Whereas James Betty in and by a certain obligation is bound unto William Miller for 200£ conditioned for the payment of 100£ on 4 December next ensuing. Now this indenture witnesseth that the said James Betty for 5 shillings paid by William Miller for a certain messuage or tentament plantation and two contiguous tracts of land butted and bounded as followeth.....situate in Allen twp.....description....thence by James Crawford's land....thence by Fry's land....thence by John Branizer's land....side Yellow Breeches Creek....containing 113 acres & 66 perches plus allowance. One containing 71 acres & 115 perches and is part of a patented tract. The other is warranted and contains 41 acres & 121 perches..... James Betty In the presence of J. L. Ord John Ord, Jr. A-49 Sept. 24, 1777 James Beaty's Admin'r. to William Crawford Deborah Beaty, widow, administrix and James Nailer of Newberry twp., York co., Esq., administrator of all and singular the goods and chattels, rights and credits which were of James Beaty, late of the twp. of Allen in the county of Cumberland, PA, farmer, deceased, who died intestate. To all to whom these presents shall come, Greetings, whereas the aforesaid James Beaty in his lifetime and the time of his death was seized in his demesne as of fee in a certain messuage, tentament plantation and two tracts of land situated in Allen township, aforesaid...description...side Yellow Breeches Creek...thence James Crawford's land....Fry's land......John Branizer's land......containing 113 acres & 66 perches plus allowance and and 41 acres and 121 perches.....and the said James Beaty died intestate and left the aforesaid Deborah, his widow and lawful issue six children and administration of all and singular to the aforesaid Deborah Beaty and James Nailer in due and legal form was committed by John Creigh, Esq. register for the probate of wills and granting letters of administration for Cumberland co., PA and whereas the aforesaid Deborah and James by their petition to the orphan's court held at Carlisle for Cumberland co., PA 21 August last past .......James Beaty's personal estate was not sufficient to pay his just debts, maintain and cloth and educate his children and they prayed to the court to allow and order said administrator to make public sale of aforesaid messuage, tentament plantation and two tracts of land and on the 10th day of this instant September by public vendue for the sum of 720£ it was sold to William Crawford of Allen township, aforesaid, farmer, he being the highest bidder...
