Fralish Jr. for Marcia Wilson in 1994, some found by Marcia Wilson at Perry Historians, and some from other sources. * Notes on the history of Carlisle newspapers from John C. Fralish, Jr.: Carlisle's first newspaper was founded in 1785: The Carlisle Gazette And Universal Repository Of Western Knowledge. later changed to Kline's Weekly Carlisle Gazette. The Gazette folded in 1817 and around 1823 was revived as the Carlisle Gazette, but expired for good shortly after. The Carlisle Herald lasted from1802 to 1920, the American Volunteer from 1814 to1915. On December 12, 1881, the first daily newspaper appeared in Carlisle: The Sentinel. The Carlisle Herald was Republican; the American Volunteer was Democrat; the Carlisle Gazette was Federalist [conservative.] Republicans were liberals in those days and became the conservatives in 1896. Throughout the 19th century the Democratic party was the conservative party. The switch happened in 1896 when William Jennings Bryant (only 36 yrs old) was nominated. Business interests then switched to the Republican party. * Jane Gibson born May 27, 1749, baptised Dec 7, 1749. Parents: Georg and Martha, Church of England. "The mother of Francis, George, John Banister and William Chesney, was a woman of extraordinary vigor of mind. By the will of her father, all she received was 78 acres of woodland with a little log mill having but one run of stones in it together with some little personal property, and one slave, but good old Anne refused to own a slave, and gave her her freedom. Some years ago I took dinner at the residence of Herman Alricks in Harrisburg, and there became acquainted with an old lady by the name of Bull. She was the mother-in-law of Mrs. Alricks, and was either ninety-nine or one hundred years old, I forget which. She asked me if I was a son of Anne Gibson. I told her I was a grandson of Anne Gibson. She remembered that she knew her well, and said that Anne Gibson stayed all night with her once when on her way to Philadelphia to bring up the fashions; but doubtless Anne had other business to attend to in Philadelphia besides getting the fashions. The Colonel (her husband) never received any pay from the Government for his services; and yet she was able to educate her boys. How well they were educated, those who knew them can tell. She erected a school house on her own, the country was then so thinly settled, property near the Falling Springs; but there were no pupils to attend but her own boys. Then she went to work and taught them at home herself. I heard General George Gibson say that all the schooling he got outside his mother's house just cost her twelve shillings. She had no road, except the old pack horse road, from Harris's Ferry (now Harrisburg) to Fort Pitt (now Pittsburgh) and it crossed the creek just below the Big Rock and then crossed back again just agove the Rock She had........[rest of article is missing.] * Married on Thursday evening the 8th inst. Gibson Dead. A Well Known Physician Succumbs to the Grim Reaper. He was aged 50 years. Death due to stomach trouble for which he was operated upon-- Mr. Warfield and Others. Dr. Charles Harrison Gibson, a well known and successful physician of this city, died at his residence, 57 West Franklin St., at 7:45 o'clock this morning of chronic stomach trouble, aged 51 years. Dr. Gibson had been critically ill for several months, his recovery having been despaired of for some days. He was confined to his bed for three weeks and gave up all hope of getting better. At his earnest solicitation as well as his family an exploratory laparotomy was performed on him on Thursday by Drs. Ragan, Wareham and Boyle as the last chance of possibly benefitting him or saving his life. The operation revealed an extensive malignant disease of the stomach and bowels of a fatal character. He is reported to have stood the operation well. Dr. Gibson was born near Gibson's Rock in Perry County, Pa, in 1846. He is a son of Robert Gibson, of Falling Springs, Pa., who is still living at the age of 86 years, and a [not direct, his grandfather was Francis Gibson, older brother of John B. Gibson] descendant of Chief Justice James [should be John] Banister Gibson of the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania of Carlisle. He pursued his academic studies at the Academy in Mechanicsburg and after attending the usual courses of lectures in the Miami Medical College graduated with the degree of M.D. in 1873. [Not true; he attended for one year and never graduated. mw.] Dr. Gibson immediately afterward entered one of the hospitals in Cincinnati as resident physician for one year, and afterwards practiced in that city until 1875. Bigler, Governor of Pennsylvania, relatives of Dr. Gibson [I don't think so; Francis rented the house to the Biglers, according to Roberts book about Ch. Justice John B. Gibson], were born, is still standing at Gibson's Rock [not in 1994; it burned down about 10 years ago] and occupied by a brother [George Gibson] of the deceased. Dr. Gibson came to Hagerstown from Mechanicsburg in 1880 [how come the census of 1880 shows him with his wife and 2 children in Monroetown? mw] and for 17 years successfully practiced his profession here. He was well known and highly esteemed and stood high in the medical fraternity of this city. The deceased is survived by his wife [Mary Jane Beecher Gibson, who I believe was estranged from him and living in Mechanicsburg, but I can't prove it. mw] and two children, Vena Zelia, who is attending Irving College, and Roy, at home. He also leaves two brothers, George at Falling Springs, and Frank, a merchant in Harrisburg, and his two half brothers, James and Samuel Huston, of Mechanicsburg. Gen. George Gibson, commissary of the U.S. army, was a grand uncle of the deceased. Funeral services will e held at the home on Saturday morning at 11 o'clock by Rev. George P. Wilson.
