A. V. BISHOP DIES AT HOSPITAL Retired Languate Teacher Had Undergone Surgery Dr. Arthur Vaughn Bishop, 223 South College Street, professor emeritus of Dickinson College, died unexpectedly this morning at 11:40 o'clock at Carlisle Hospital where yesterday he underwent surgery. Dr. Bishop came to the Dickinson College faculty in 1928 after 22 years as a teacher in Virginia and West Virginia schools. He retired last June as A. J. Clark Professor Emeritus of Classical Languages and Literature. During the present term, however, he taught a number of classes at the request of the college. Dr. Bishop, a native of Riner, Va., began his teaching career upon his graduation from Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1906. Until 1928 he was principal of Blacksburg, Va., High School. While doing graduate work at the University of Virginia as an instructor in Latin he received his Master'sDegree in 1911 and his Doctor of Philosophy Degree in 1913. He was professor of Latin and Greek at Hollins College, Va., from 1913 until 1923 and during the latter year he joined the faculty of Georgetown College in Kentucky in the same capacity. He taught there until coming to Dickinson College in 1928. For a number of years he was a member of the Latin faculty at the University of Virginia Summer sessions. He came to Dickinson as an associate professor of Latin and was appointed a full professor and head of the department the following year. In 1940 he was made A. J. Clark Professor of Languages and Literature. Dr. Bishop married Ellen P. Hoffman in 1914. He was a member of Second Presbyterian Church and at the time of his death was clerk of the Session of the church. He also was a former trustee of the church and taught the Men's Bible Class. He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, national honorary scholastic fraternity, the American Philological Association, the Classical Association of the United States and other professional organizations. He was a member of the Carlisle Rotary Club. For a brief time during World War I he served as educational secretary of the YMCA at Camp Hancock, Ga.
