Murphy CARLISLE, Pa. - Retired U.S. Marine Corps Master Sgt. John B. Murphy, 73, of Carlisle died Tuesday, June 26, 2001, in Holy Spirit Hospital, Camp Hill, Pa. The family will receive friends 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Friday in St. Patrick's Catholic Church, 85 Marsh Drive, Carlisle. A Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday in the church with burial with military honors in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, East Hanover Township, Annville. Mr. Murphy was born July 9, 1927, in Norwalk, Conn., a son of Francis and Clara Link Murphy of Norwalk. He was preceded in death by his wife, Carol Jean Harter Murphy of Burton. He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in June 1945. After completing recruit training at Parris Island, he served with the First Marine Division at Beijing China until November 1946, where he was discharged and returned home to finish high school. After graduating from Norwalk Senior High School in 1948, he returned to active military duty. He also served as a Marine Security Guard at the American Embassies in London, England; Paris, France and Tehran, Iran. Other overseas tours include a six-month cruise in 1959 on the Mediterranean Sea with the U.S. Sixth Fleet. And, in 1966, he was the Basel Legal Chief at Camp Butler, Okinawa. His stateside assignments included duty as a drill instructor at Parris Island and San Diego, Calif. He also served as a Marine recruiting sergeant at Louisville, Maysville and Danville, Ky. In June 1970, after completing three years as base legal chief at Quantico, Va., he retired from the U.S. Marine Corps with 24 years of distinguished service. In addition to the China Service Medal, he was also awarded the Navy Achievement Medal by the Secretary of the Navy, the Good Conduct Medal with six clusters, the Asiatic-Pacific Service Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Navy Occupation Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal and a Certificate of Commendation from the Commanding General, Marine Corps Base, Quantico, Va. After retiring from the military service, he worked for a time as general manager at McDonald's of East High Street, Carlisle. For 13 years, he was employed by the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry as the Veterans Employment Representative at the Carlisle Job Center. In 1988, he was awarded a certificate of recognition by the Pennsylvania Secretary of Labor for providing outstanding employment service to veterans. He was also recognized by the Pennsylvania chapter of the Disabled American Veterans for the same service. He was a life member of the China Marine Association and the Disabled American Veterans, West Shore Chapter No. 50. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1480, Kerrville, Texas, the Pennsylvania Association of Retired Persons, the Marine Corps Association, the London Marine Detachment 1946-1951 and the Fleet Reserve Association. He was a member of Saint Patrick's Church, Carlisle. Surviving are four children: U.S. Navy Lt. JG Glenn D. Murphy of Honolulu; Michael J. Murphy of Shippensburg, Pa.; Brenda K. Shirk of Bolivia, N.C. and Susan Greving of Germantown, Md.; Four brothers, Frank J. Murphy of San Francisco, Calif., Paul J. Murphy of New Canaan, Conn., Edward T. Murphy of Ridgefield, Conn. and Thomas V. Murphy of Swannano, N.C.; three sisters, Ruth Schreyer of New Canaan, Conn., Clara Karstensen of Pownal, Vt., and Lillian T. Murphy of Fairfield, Conn.; 10 grandchildren and a great-grandchild. The family suggests that those who wish may make memorials to St. Patrick's Catholic School Expansion Fund, 140 East Pomfret St., Carlisle, Pa. 17013.
