Will of ARMSTRONG Carothers will book L page 15 sates he is in feeble health to my three sons Josiah, William & Armstrong, the 212 A of land now in their possession to be divided between them as follows: run line fr Martin Carothers line opp old lime kiln north, but not to interfere with orchard nor too near the farm now occupied by Josiah & to strike James Greason's line at or near his corner. This part I devise to my son Josiah & being what he now lives on, the residue of the land I devise to my two sons William & Armstrong to be equally divided in quantity & quality & the part on which William lives I devise to him & the remainder to Armstrong. to my daughter Isabella Black $200 to be paid by William & Armstrong & charged on their land to my daughter Martha $300 to be paid by Josiah & charged on his land. Witnesses Andrew Richards, Peter Fought On Feby 3, 1849 before Wm Gould register, came the above witnesses & prove the will & declare further that it became torn & mutilated & part destroyed including her signature in the following manner. Andrew Richard in whose hands the will was lodged says that Andrew Carothers called on him & asked him to bring it to his residence & read it which he did in presence of sd Andrew & of Josiah Carothers & Mary Carothers, his wife, Josiah Carothers Jr & Peter Fought, one of the deponents & read said will. Thereupon, Martha Carothers, wife of Josiah Carothers, rose from her seat & asked Richards to let her see it. Said Richards was in the act of handing the will to Andrew Carothers, the Exr when Mary Carothers came forward & caught it about the same time that Andrew Carothers took it. She twisted the paper & tore it & Andrew called for help to take it out of her hands. Both deponents caught her hands & Andrew took the part here exhibited fr her hands, the part torn off was in her other hand & Andrew tried to get it, but she succeeded in putting it in her mouth & it was seen no more. Also all of my books, book case & desk. to my son Andrew Carothers $100 which for various reasons, I consider his full share of my estate to my grandson William Myers $200 Orders rest of R.E. sold & it with personal property after paying debts & specific bequest to go to the rest of my children viz: A. 1. Mary intermarried with Benjamin Myers B. 2. Eliza intermarried with Benjamin Myers [sic] C. 3. Catherine intermarried with George Heikes D. 4. John E. 5. Isabella Jane F. 6.
