His father was long in public life, and for years was an associate judge of the county. John Wallace was brought up as a farmer, but as he grew to maturer years his attention was turned to surveying, and he came to Harrisburg, where his later days were passed as a practical surveyor, and where he died July 22, 1872. "He was," writes a contemporary, "an unobtrusive, modest and estimable citizen, successful in his business, trustworthy in all the relations of life, and a sincere and earnest Christian." Mr. Cowden married Mary E., daughter of Frederick and Mary (Barnett) Hatton, of Lower Paxton. They left a large family.
