  McCAMMON, JOHN, of Middletown, was born in the county of Down, 
Ireland, about the year 1774, and emigrated to the United States when 
about seventeen years of age.  He resided a short time in Chester 
county, from whence he came to Middletown, where he followed his trade 
of stone-mason.  He married there and afterwards kept the principal 
hotel and stage office on Main street, near Center square.  When 
General Lafayette, on his visit to America, in 1824-25, passed through 
Middletown on his way to Harrisburg, he and his escort dined at the 
house of Mr. McCammon.  Mr. McCammon was appointed postmaster early in 
1803, and continued to hold the office until December 24, 1829, a 
period of nearly twenty-seven years.  He died July 24, 1838, aged 
sixty-four years, and was buried in the old Presbyterian graveyard in 
Middletown.  Two of Mr. McCammon's daughters served lengthened terms as 
postmistresses, Mrs. Catharine A. Stouch and Mrs. Rachel C. McKibbin, 
making in all a period of about forty-seven years for the family as 
postmasters.  Mr. McCammon was a consistent member of the Paxtang 
Presbyterian church.
