After the death of his father, in 1832, he was taken by his uncle, William Rutherford, in whose family he remained until he attained his majority. He received his education and read medicine under Dr. W. W. Rutherford, of Harrisburg, graduating at the University of Pennsylvania in March, 1849. He at once began the practice of medicine at New Cumberland, which promised bright, but his health failing he was compelled to relinquish the duties of his profession. He returned home and undertook the superintendence of the farm, hoping thereby to re- establish his health. This proved futile, for he gradually failed and died at Harrisburg on the 8th of February, 1851. Intelligent, amiable and upright, Dr. Levi Rutherford's young life left a rose-tinted memory in many households.
