  WHITLEY, CAPT. MICHAEL, was born in 1730, in the north of Ireland.  
He came to America when a young man, and settled in what was then 
Paxtang township, Lancaster county.  He was a farmer by occupation and 
was in good circumstances when the war of the Revolution aroused the 
war-eagles on the Susquehanna.  He raised a company of associators for 
Col. Robert Elder's battalion, and was in active service in the Jersey 
campaign of 1776, and the battles ob Brandywine and Germantown.  On the 
6th of December, 1777, he was severely wounded in a skirmish at 
Chestnut Hill, taken prisoner, and died a few days thereafter at 
Philadelphia.  Captain Whitley was a brave and gallant officer, and the 
commendations of his superior officers show how highly he was esteemed. 
He left a wife Martha, who died in Paxtang, November 11, 1813, aged 
about ninety years.
