Black became a significant land owner in both Delaware and Montgomery Counties. His main estate was called Upland,once located on the corner of Lancaster and Bryn Mawr Avenues(now the Ludington Library property). In the 1850s, Samuel Black worked as a lumber merchant. By 1860, he had become a railroad superintendent. Records show that he worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad as superintendent of the Harrisburg, Middle Division, during the years 1866-1874.
