The question came up, how long did he serve in the War of 1812. No one can answer as we do not know. ROBERT HOOD, my great-grandfather, was born in Newton-Stewart, County Tyrone, Ulster, Ireland in 1779 or 80. He came to America in 1801, landed in the Port at Phila. He settled in Crawford Co., Greenwood Township, Pa. Two miles from the town of Allantie. He was called home from the War by sickness. His brother JAMES took his place in the Army. How long these brothers served in that War, we cannot say...JAMES died unmarried Aug 30, 1831. We do not know his age or birthdate yet know that he was much younger than ROBERT who died in 1863, aged 84 years. They were both buried at the old homestead, in HOODS Cemetery. I was told last year that the G.A.R. were talking of erecting a monument to JAMES grave. But they have not done so at this writing... [Signed] ALICE PARMELY, 5759 Osage Ave, Phila" 20 June 1916 [Date Stamped] ALICE PARMELY to Commr of Pensions, Wash, D.C. "The Adjt. Genl. of the War Department office at Washington gave me the following information to the time my great-grandfather ROBERT HOOD and his brother JAMES served in the War of 1812. The records of that office show that JAMES HOOD served in the War of 1812 as a private in CAPTAIN MICHAEL MILLER'S company 17th (HALL'S) Regiment, Pennsylvania Militia from August 15 to September 2, 1812 and in the same company, 135th (CHRISTY'S) Regiment, Pennsylvania Militia from September 3 to Oct. 31, 1812. "The records also show that JAMES HOOD served in said War (as a private in CAPTAIN JOSEPH McCOY'S company of Southern Rangers, 1st (SUTHERLAND'S0 Regiment Riflemen, Pennsylvania Volunteers, from September 14, 1814 to January 3, 1815. "ROBERT HOOD served in the War of 1812 as a corporal in CAPTAIN JOHN McDOWELL'S Company, 133d (GOWDY'S) Regiment, Pennsylvania Militia, from January 1st to February 11, 1814. Nothing further relative to these men has been found on record. "The Adjt. Genl. of the War Dept. thought possible if a pension was ever granted for their service, additional information relative to them could be obtained from the Commissioner of Pensions. "...On ROBERT HOODS Tombstone gives his age at death in 1863 as 85 yrs old. Therefore, the date of his birth would be in 1778. This is not possible as his brother JOHN and the eldest of the family was born in 1778. Hence, ROBERT probably was born in 1779 or 80. "JOHN settled in this City in 1799. His eldest son was a graduate of West Point and became Captain of Engineers in the U. S. Army. His name was WASHINGTON born in 1808, died July 17, 1840. "I shall be thankful... Very sincerely, MRS. ALICE PARMELY"
