Habbersett, Veteran Postman, Dies" MIDDLETOWN -- JOSHUA WHITAKER HABBERSETT, who was a horse and buggy mail carrier when Woodrow Wilson was President, died Thursday in Lankenau Hospital, Overbrook. He was 69 and lived on Middletown Road. A lifelong resident of Delaware County and a member of the HABBERSETT meat packing family, he was born in Mt. Alverno, Middletown, the son of ESMOND H. and HANNAH WHITAKER HABBERSETT. After attending schools in Middletown he first worked on his family's farm and then served as a clerk for the Pennsylvania Railroad at the Elwyn station. In January, 1918, he entered the employ of the Post Office Department and served as a mail carrier out of Media for 41 years before retiring last September. He had been ill for several years. Known to hundreds of area residents, he first operated a mail route by horse and buggy and later by automobile. He is survived by his widow, KATHRYN BRAMBLE HABBERSETT; a son, JOSHUA, Jr. of Middletown Heights; a daughter, Mrs. FRANCES GIBB of Bethesda, Md.; a foster son, KENNETH BABE, at home; two brothers, CHARLES and HARPER; two sisters, Mrs. PRISCILLA DUTTON and Mrs. BERTHA DALTRY, all of Delaware County, and five grandchildren. Active for more than 30 years in the affairs of Mt. Hope Church, he served as steward, trustee and secretary of the Sunday School. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the J. Nelson Rigby funeral home, Baltimore Ave. and Jackson St., Media. Friends may call there Sunday evening. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery. Note: Son of Esmonde H. Habbersett & Hannah L.
