B. Markland Is Dead Built Shore Convention Hall Atlantic City, Dec. 6--Matthew B. Markland, builder of Convention Hall, here, died yesterday at his home, 216 N. Nassau Av., Margate. He was 86. Born in Philadelphia, Mr. Markland came to Atlantic City in 1908 and operated a construction business in partnership with former Mayor Edward L. Bader until 1915. Thereafter he continued the business in his own name. In 1927, his firm was awarded the contract to build Atlantic City Convention Hall, at that time the largest clear span building in the world. The total cost including ground (7 1/2 acres) came close to $35 million. Mr. Markland was the great-great-grandson of Jacob Broom, Delaware patriot who was a signer of the United States Constitution. Throughout his 50 years in Atlantic City, Mr. Markland was active in civic affairs and the local Boy Scouts movement. He was a director of the Atlantic City Chamber of Commerce for 22 years and served as director of the Atlantic City Rotary Club board for six years. He was a founder and a former president of the Building Contractors Association of New Jersey. He was a Mason and a member of the Pennsylvania State Society of the Cincinnati and the Pennsylvania Sons of the Revolution. Surviving are his wife, Inge; a daughter, Mrs. Lillian Van Sant, and two sisters. Services and burial will be private.
