Mr. Vanleer, our genial butcher, who resides about four miles out of town, was very much distressed yesterday morning, his little girl, aged about two years, having been fatally scalded by falling into a pot of boiling lard. -------------------------------------- Chester Times (12 Jan 1882) Page 3 DEATH IN THE LARD POT.-The little son of W. G. Vanleer, of Village Green, who fell in a pot of lard Tuesday afternoon and died from the effects of it Wednesday morning was but two years old. Mrs. Vanleer had poured some hot lard into a pot to cool. The pot was setting on the floor, and the little boy in his play fell into it. Half of his head, face, body and oe arm was badly scalded. Large blisters were raised on his face and body. He was a remarkable little boy for pluck. When he fell in his mother had her back turned to him and he got out himself without crying or showing the slightest emotion of pain. He lived through the night and must have suffered but during it all did not give the least evidence of pain. He will be buried Saturday.
