Mrs. Sarah WHITAKER widow of Joshua WHITAKER died at her home, 313 Manchester Avenue last evening after a prolonged illness. She was a woman of rare quality endearing herself to all with whom she came in contact by her gentle, unselfish disposition, her calm even temperament and her many acts of kindness and generosity. Many in trouble and sorrow came to her and were comforted by her words of sympathy and encouragement. In the sickroom, her tender and helpful presence was like a ministering angel. When death entered the homes of friend of neighbor she was ever reading to aid and the bereaved hearts. She was beloved by all who knew her, a good kind neighbor, a devoted wife, and affectionate mother, and a consistent Christian. She was a member of Union M.E. Church, where she was an ardent worker and faithful attendant for more than fifty years. During her severe illness she bore her suffering with remarkable fortitude, conversing cheerfully with her grief stricken family, arranging all her affairs with the utmost calmness and serenity, thoughtful to the last for the welfare of those around her. She was fully prepared for the great change, and passed away in the “glorious hope of a blessed immortality”. The precious memory of this dear mother will ever live in the hearts of her children and grandchildren to whom she was greatly endeared, and they will surely “rise up and call her blessed”. She is survived by one son, George WHITAKER, proprietor of the MORTON CHRONICLE, and one daughter, Mrs. Antrim SMITH, of Pleasant Hill, who have the sincere sympathy of many friends.
