Hagerty, in correspondence with Mrs. Irene Lignian, and as attributed to a "George Hagerty" concerning this Mary HAGERTY: "first woman who came to this country, came looking for her husband!" We still have yet to find even the name of this missing husband. According to descendant Robert J. Hagerty, Mary Hagerty came to America April 14, 1802 (Note: her son William, said that they arrived at New Castle, Delaware in 1801.) William HAGERTY: Information from Naturalization Record: immigrated from Ireland to New Castle, Delaware in 1801; moved to Fayette County, PA from there. Naturalized on June 9, 1828 at age of 42 years old. He was the sponsor for his brother Samuel. William came with his mother to America when he was 14 years of age. [source: pg. 342; Biographical and Portrait Encyclopedia of Fayette Co.; by Samuel Wiley] Samuel HAGERTY: Information from Naturalization Proceedings: Oath of Allegiance to the U. S., given and Admitted, on 25th August 1828 in Fayette Co., PA; Alien Document #360. Witnesses were William Hagerty and William Nutt Naturalization record shows that he was sponsored by his brother William, and the date of naturalization was August 25, 1828. Samuel was born in Ireland and immigrated when he was about 4 years old. Landed at New Castle, Delaware, and thence to Fayette County, PA. Further states that the petitioner has been residing within the limits and under the jurisdiction of the United States between the 14th day of April one thousand eight hundred and two and the 18th day of June 1812." Mary Hagerty reportedly brought over all of her possessions in a wooden box much like the old-fashioned oval lunch pail. [This box was in the possession of Robert J. Hagerty of Hemet, California, in 1973. Mr. Hagerty relates the following narrative about the box and the penknife that was always kept in the box: Irish yew wood box (no nails): "Mary gave the box to [son] Samuel, who passed it on to his son Reuben, who took it to Missouri in a Conestoga wagon in 1867. My Grandfather attended Reuben's funeral at Arrow Rock, Missouri in 1882 and his wife, Minerva (nee DOLLISON], gave the box to my Grandfather who brought it back to Pennsylvania. At my Grandfather's death it was given to my father, Robert Dinsmore Hagerty, who gave it to me before his death in 1946. I brought it to California and it will be passed on to my son Robert Dinsmore Hagerty. The penknife that my great, great, Grandfather used has always been kept in this box." This pen-knife supposedly belonged to the Unknown father Hagerty, husband of Mary, and according to family lore, he was " a weaver of linen, who used a pen-knife to cut the ends of the thread." The knife was in the possession of Robert J. Hagerty of Hemet, California in 1973. 1802: Research of Robert J. Hagerty, states that Mary Hagerty came to America on the 14th of April 1802 (William Hagerty, Mary's son said he came in 1801, according to his naturalization papers. Assume that Mary and children did emigrate about 1801-1802.] Papers state that they emigrated from Co. Derry, Ireland and landed at Delaware; thence to Chester Co., and by 1808 the family is located in Fayette Co., PA 1808: Mary Hagerty purchases property from Richard Noble in Washington Twp., Fayette Co. (dated 12/5/1808]. The land total is 27 3/4 acres and 3 perches, and sells for $244.30 "cash in hand". Mary signs this land indenture with an 'X' made her mark, Mary Hagerty, and the word "widow" is added in over the X. History of Property: Part of an original land patent dated November 10, 1785, and held by William Dunn; property known as "Punkin Patch". By the last will and testament of William Dunn, dated April 4, 1800, the land is bequeathed to sons Andrew & William; and in turn Andrew & William conveys title on June 13, 1800 to Richard Noble. Richard Noble conveyed the land on Dec. 5th, 1808 to Mary Hagerty. She in turn later sells it to ** John Dixon, Jr. on April 21, 1831. Sold to John Dixon, Jr. on April 21, 1831. The land sells for $600. 1831: [Deed Book X, pages 236, 237, 238; document is dated to October 19th]: Mary and son Samuel purchase 113 acres of land owned by RITTENHOUSE, which was called "Montpelier". Land is described as 114 acres & 61 perches; divided as follows: 2/3 of land held by Mary Hagerty, and 1/3 of land held by Samuel Hagerty and his wife Elizabeth. This land is bounded by property owned by John and James PATTERSON. 1839: August 27th: Nine of the above 113 acres and 130 perches are sold to Aaron Townsend by Mary, Samuel & Elizabeth Hagerty. [Aaron Townsend was of Quaker descent, and the elder Aaron was born 10/20/1822 0 d. 6/1/1900. The son Aaron Townsend was a deacon of Flatwoods Baptist Church for 35 years.] The land was traced to owners in 1974, and they were Edward ROSINSKI and his wife. " Description: There was originally a log cabin (house); one small frame dwelling house and outbuildings. The frame dwelling is still standing, but the log house has fallen down." This leaves a balance of 104 acres still owned by Mary and son Samuel. [Researcher referenced the "Fayette Co. Atlas of 1872: Note the Townsend Post Office and store located across the road from the Church".] Would this be the Flatwoods Baptist Church? [Researcher reference: Nelson's Biographical Dictionary and History of Fayette Co., PA; Vol. III, page 1027" "Frank L. TOWNSEND, merchant and the Postmaster at Flatwoods, Fayette Co., PA. His father, Aaron Townsend, b. 20 Oct. 1822 and died 1 June 1900. Aaron Townsend was deacon of Flatwoods Baptist Church for 35 years." 1840 Census Mary is shown living in the home of son Samuel, located in Franklin Twp. In 1845 Mary dies at the age of 83 years. She is buried in the Little Redstone M.E. Church in Franklin Twp., Fayette County, PA. Tombstone Inscription reads: "MARY HAGERTY, born in Ireland; died 1-19-1845 age 83 yrs 11 mo 7 day." [Note: Also interred in the same cemetery are, GEHO: Sarah, George M., Elizabeth, and two unknown Geho children. The GEHO family will intermarry with Mary's grandson, William B. Hagerty in 1850, to Kezia GEHO.] 1845: By last will and testament of Mary HAGERTY, probated May 31, 1845, the remainder of land, held in joint by she and son Samuel, totaling 104 acres (purchased in 1831], is given to Samuel upon her death. Tax rolls 1819-1840, Fayette county, Pennsylvania [Source: LDS Film # 1449320] We know that our ancestor MARY HAGERTY bought land in this township in 1808, and we have tax information from abt. 1820 to her death in 1845, which helps to "fix her in time and place". We are still trying to "fill the gap" backwards in time from when she and her family emigrated to Pennsylvania, however this microfilm reel only had the one year to offer in Washington Township. The twenty six acres listed on the tax roll, does reflect the land indenture that we have for her. 1819: -HAGGERTY, MARY, widow [abt. 58 years of age], owns 26 acres ($520), 2 horses ($30), 1 cattle ($12), 2 hogs = Total Value ($562) -HAGGERTY, SAMUEL, laborer ($60)[abt. 23 years old], 1 horse ($20), 1 cattle ($12), = total valuation $92 -HAGGERTY, WILLIAM, saddler ($125)[abt. 32 years old], 1 lot ($225), 1 horse ($20), 1 cattle ($12), = total valuation $382 - JOBS, JOHN, laborer -(an 'X' drawn through the following name, with the notation that he had left his family:) JOBS, SAMUEL, wagonmaker; part landlord, changed or charged to MARTIN MOFFAT.
