William HAGERTY, eldest known son of the widow Mary Hagerty; born abt. 1787 Ireland and died after 1855, probably in Fayette Co., PA. Naturalization Record states that he emigrated from Ireland to New Castle, Delaware in 1801, and moved to Fayette County, PA from there. He was granted legal naturalization status on June 9, 1828 at age of 42 years. He was then the sponsor for his brother Samuel. He came with his mother to America when he was 14 years of age. Wiley][Jordan's history states he was about 8 years old on his arrival to America.] William married Elizabeth Johnson/Johnston and they were the parents of the following Hagerty surnamed children: Robert James Johnston Samuel Jackson Elizabeth William, Jr. Mary James Thomas Baird Joseph Sarah Jane David Jobe Henry From a fellow descendant researcher we have the following story: Elizabeth Johnston Hagerty had been raised a Methodist but in later years developed a strong learning toward the Baptists. Elizabeth died while on a visit to her daughter in Illinois [possibly Rosamond Twp., Christian Co., IL], and she and William were buried many miles apart." The exact burial locations for William and his wife Elizabeth are not known. Samuel James Hagerty was the second son of Mary Hagerty, and he too made the sea journey from Ireland to the fledgling United States while a very young child. He was born about 1798 in Ireland, and died in Fayette County, PA April 15, 1857. Samuel married June 23, 1825 to Elizabeth Blaney the daughter of Samuel Blaney (a well known schoolteacher of his day) and his wife Margaret Foy Blaney. This couple were the parents of six Hagerty children: William Blaney Samuel Louisa Johnston D. Reuben Robert From Beers Biographical: page 1120: "Robert Haggarty is a son of ...Samuel Haggarty, who was born in County Down, Ireland, and was brought to America by his parents when but four years old. He grew to manhood on a farm in Fayette County, Penn., which was located one mile from Coal Center, Washington County, and there attended the log-cabin schools of the period. In early manhood he was married to Elizabeth Blayney (sic BLANEY), a member of a prominent pioneer family, and she born him the following named children: Mrs. Louisa Russell, of Fayette County, Penn.; William, living in Monongahela; Samuel, deceased at the age of nine years; Johnson, who died in Ohio at the age of twenty-two years; Reuben, who went to Missouri with $1,500, and died seventeen years later, leaving a property of $50,000, and Robert. The father died in 1857 at the age of sixty-one years. He was a prominent member of the Democratic party."… -Oath of Allegiance to the U. S., given and Admitted, on 25 August 1828 in Fayette Co., PA; Alien Document #360. Witnesses were William Hagerty and William Nutt -Naturalization record shows that he was sponsored by his brother William, and date of naturalization was August 25, 1828. Samuel was born in Ireland and immigrated when he was about 4 years old. Landed at New Castle, Delaware, and thence to Fayette County, PA. Further states that the petitioner has been residing within the limits and under the jurisdiction of the United States between the 14th day of April one thousand eight hundred and two and the 18th day of June 1812....."
