Murray was the son of Samuel and Eva Snyder Murray, a nd grandson of Jacob and Catherine Murray. He was born in September 1845. He married Mary Agnes Long around 1863. They had four children: Elijah, Mary, Samuel and George. Levi and Mary appear on all the pertinent censuses for Springfield Township. All indicate that they had only those four children. Elijah married Sara Etta Leichliter and Addie Mills. Mary Ella "Allie" married Joshua Bailey. George never married. Samuel married Susan Eicher. Levi was located about one mile from the Normalville Cemetery, which is adjacent to the United Methodist Church, formerly known as the United Brethren Church. Mary Agnes Long, who went by Agnes, was living with Jeremiah and Sarah Nichelson on the 1850 and 1860 Springfield Township Censuses. According to her obituary, she was born in 1847. The 1850 Census lists her age as 5. Exhaustive research has not provided a clue as to who her parents were. Sarah Nichelson's maiden name was Johnson. Through the years, census lists show that Sarah and Jeremiah were married and had one son, John. He later married a descendant of Josiah Murray - Levi's brother - and named a daughter Mary Agnes, so there could be more of relationship between the families than is readily apparent. Mary died on January 15, 1903. On her death certificate, her parents are 'unknown.' Her obituary does not list any siblings. Who she was and where she came from will remain a mystery for now. Like his forbears, Levi Murray was active in the community. School directors appointed Levi Murray, a Republican, to the vacancy occasioned by the death of A.W. King, a Democrat. - Connellsville Courier January 3, 1890 The new school board organized on Saturday by electing the following officers: Pres. Jacob Richter; Sec. Levi Murray; Treasurer, George W. Leichliter. - Connellsville Courier May 17, 1895 An item appearing in the Keystone Courier gives a glimpse of what life was like in the late 1800s. Levi Murray lost a valuable horse last Saturday evening. While returning from Connellsville, it slipped on the ice and was fatally injured. - Keystone Courier February 13, 1885 Levi died on January 21, 1907. His estate is #18, Estate Book 4, p67. George Kern was the administrator. A balance of $933.92 remained when the will was proved on December 4, 1907. In February 1908, Levi's four children received $33.11. The estate included $22.40 each for the orphaned children of Elijah and Hannah Miner Murray. The money was their share of the dower in the estate of Hannah Murray. His death made news. -The Connellsville Courier (Tues. Jan. 22, 1907 edition) had this to say about him: "Mr. Murray was one of the town's most prominent citizens. He served in every township office and had accumulated a comfortable fortune from his farm of 140 acres. Last week, he received a check for the coal under it." Levi Murray Dies Levi S. Murray, a prominent farmer living one-half mile from Normalville, dropped dead in Campbell's store Monday afternoon, January 21, 1907. Deceased was about 67 years of age and apparently was enjoying the best of health. He drove to town on business Monday afternoon and in a short time entered Campbell's store. He spoke to two or three of the men sitting about and a moment later fell to the floor. He never spoke or moved afterwards and it is believed death was almost instantaneous. Heart trouble, it is thought, was the cause. Four children and many other friends and relatives are left to mourn his loss. The children are: George W. Murray, at home; Elijah L. Murray, Samuel S. Murray and Mrs. Joshua M. Bailey, the last three living at Moyer. Josiah S. Murray of Normalville is a brother and Mrs. Daniel Hensel of Springfield and Mrs. Fred Miller, Connellsville, are sisters. Funeral Wednesday at the United Brethren Church (at Normalville). Rev. E.E. DeHaven officiating. -Daily News Standard Mary Agnes "Aggie" Long Murray Dies Mrs. Agnes Murray died January 15, 1903 at her late home of congestion of the heart. Deceased is survived by her husband and four children, viz: George and Samuel of Springfield, Elijah L. of Moyer and Mrs. Joshua Bailey of Stauffer. She was a consistent member of the United Brethren Church (Normalville). Funeral Saturday at 10 a.m. Interment in United Brethren cemetery. Rev. Mary's parents are not known at this time. Levi and Mary Long Murray had these children: Elijah (Dec. 26, 1864-April 27, 1943) married (1) Sara Etta Leichliter (2) Addie Mills Mary "Ella" (Feb. 1867-1958) married Joshua Bailey George W.L. Murray and Sara Etta Leichliter Elijah Murray was married first to Sara Etta Leichliter and second to Addie Mills. A more detailed description of these family groups will be given in the next chapter. Elijah and Sarah Leichliter had these children: Lilly May (Sept. 11, 1889-Dec. 20, 1889) Katie Ellen (Nov. 29, 1890-May 12, 1892) Florence Edna (Jan. 25, 1899-Oct. 28, 1901) Elmer (Sept. 30, 1892-June 1974) married Susan Yowler Russell (Aug. 9, 1894-Sept. 28, 1932) married Pearl Elijah Murray and Addie Rose Mills had these children: *James (March 27, 1907-July 15, 1976) married Sylvia Brinson Mary (April 4, 1909-after 1992) Charles Renninger Jess Edgar (May 28, 1914-Nov. 8, 1918) George (Sept. 7, 1910-Feb. 3, 1991) married Alice Dean Goldie (March 10, 1917-Aug. 12, 1992) married John Marnelli Charles Irwin (Feb. 9, 1920-Feb. 21, 1920) Helen Louise (Dec. 31, 1920-Feb. 18, 1922) Norman (Jan. 7, 1923-July 11, 1972) married Marion Shelley Milton (April 17, 1925-May 17, 1992) married Ruth Boothe * James was the son of Addie Mills. Elijah adopted him. Mary Ella Murray and Joshua Bailey. Mary "Ella" Murray was the daughter of Levi and Mary Murray, the granddaughter of Samuel and Eva Snyder Murray and the great-grand-daughter of Jacob and Catherine Murray. She was born in February 1867 and died in 1958. She married Joshua Bailey. He was the son of Sarah Kerns Bailey and the grandson of Joshua (1801-1887) and Susan Kerns (1807-1871). He had a sister named Catherine. On the 1900 Census, George Murray, listed as brother-in-law, was living with the Baileys. Mary and Joshua, along with several of their children, are buried at Normalville. Also buried in the family plot is Anna Bailey (April 17, 1892-April 17, 1959). It is not clear how she is related. Mary Ella Murray and Joshua Bailey had these children: Lulu Bailey ( June 1883-before 1970) married Mr. White Henry Bailey (Nov. 10, 1885-Sept. 1955) James S. Bailey (Jan. 5, 1887 to Oct. 19, 1970) married Mabel Ninygen Thomas Bailey (March 1892-before 1970) Milton Bailey (Nov. 19, 1894 to Dec. 1969) Nettie Bailey (1897-Jan. 13, 1900); 2y, 11m, 22d William Bailey (Nov. 1899 to Oct. 1970) Lena Bailey ( 1903-1984) Delmar Bailey (May 15, 1905-April 29, 1939) James S. Bailey Dies James S. Bailey, 81, of Dunbar, RD 2, died at 1:50 a.m. Sunday. He was born Jan. 5, 1887, at Normalville, son of the late Joshua M. and Mary Ellen Murray Bailey. He was a retired US Steel employee at Leisenring No. 1, a member of the UMWA, and Trinity Lutheran Church. He had been a Dunbar Twp. resident all his life. He is survived by his wife, Mabel Ninygen Bailey and a sister, Miss Lena Bailey, of Connellsville. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Miss Nettie Bailey and Mrs. Lulu White; and five brothers, Henry, William, Delmar, Thomas and Milton. - Connellsville Courier Oct. 19, 1970 Samuel L. Murray and Susan Eicher Samuel was the son of Levi and Mary Long Murray, the grandson of Samuel and Eva Snyder Murray and the great-grandson of Jacob and Catherine Murray. He was born in 1874, according to his marriage license application, which gave his occupation as a laborer. It is not clear when he died. He was alive in 1922, when his youngest child was born, but had died prior to the death of his brother, George in 1929. Samuel married Susan Eicher on July 31, 1897. She was born in 1879, the daughter of Abraham and Louise Eicher. Details are sketchy on Samuel and Susan. It isn't even clear where they lived. The matter becomes even more cloudy with the death of George W. Murray, Samuel's brother. George, who was unmarried, left part of his estate to Samuel's three children. (#9, December Orphan's Court, 1929) Each child was to receive one-ninth of George's estate. The children of Samuel Murray are listed as: Ebert (Dec. 26, 1897-February 1987) Agnes L. (Butler) Isabelle (Elizabeth) A follow-up to this legal matter came in the form of a petition by Elizabeth Cooke, on February 3, 1930, in which she states that her daughter, Elizabeth, is actually named Isabelle and that she was born on Nov. 8, 1922. She is requesting that the estate pay $115.69 to her (Elizabeth Cooke) as the guardian of Isabelle Murray. Elizabeth Cooke's address is given as 1534 Twenty-Eighth Street, NW, Washington, DC. Samuel is referred to as 'former husband' now deceased. The wording could simply be a reference to his demise. She was awarded the money. Another legal document involving a claimant against George Murray's estate directs that Ebert Murray, residing at Beilton, Virginia, be paid $25 as a witness on behalf of the estate. Susan and Elizabeth Eicher may or may not be the same person. In either case, she evidently married a Mr. Cooke, either following a divorce or the death of Samuel Murray. George Walter L. Murray George Murray was born on November 25, 1870 and died on Jan. 5, 1929. He never married. Orphan's Court records show that his estate was administrated by his brother Elijah and his brother-in-law, Joshua Bailey. According to these documents, he died in Warrenton, Virginia, but his legal residence was North Union Township, Fayette County, PA. After a settlement was made with N. Ruth May and John F. May of Warren one-third of his estate each to his brother Elijah and sister Ella Bailey and a one-ninth each share to the three children of Samuel Murray, deceased. George is buried in Normalville Cemetery. He lived all of his life in Fayette County, first in Springfield Township, and then at various locales, including Dunbar. An item in the January 3, 1890 edition of the Connellsville Courier stated: "Elijah Murray and family will move back to the home of W.H. Leichliter." Although he may have done some farming early on, he became the first of his family to choose another occupation. He worked at the Frick Coke Company for 45 years, prior to retiring. Elijah was married twice. His first wife was Sara Etta "Sadie"Leichliter, whom he married on September 13, 1888. She died at age 31. He remained a widower until 1908, when he married Addie Mills. Sara was the daughter of William Henry Harrison and Susannah Shultz Leichliter (1843 - ), both of Somerset. William Leichliter was born on February 11, 1841 and died on January 1, 1891. He was the son of Jacob Leichliter and his first wife, Jemima Campbell. (Jacob's second wife was Margaret Williams.) Susannah was born in 1843. She and William married on March 18, 1862. A photo of him taken around 1900 indicates he had the dark hair and blue eyes that were a trademark among the Murray men. Addie, the daughter of John and Mary Ann Davis Mills, was born in Clear Spring, MD. She was about 5'4" tall. She had coal black hair that turned a beautiful silver as she aged. Her eyes were blue at times. Other times they turned gray. She was 3/4 American Indian. Her mother was a full-blood Cherokee. Her father was half-Indian. The other half was a mixture of Irish and German. Her parents were adamant that the children not reveal their Indian background due to rampant discrimination. But Addie was extremely proud of her American Indian heritage and talked about it often. Elijah was the first of his direct line to move from the mountains of Normalville and the first to choose a career that didn't involve farming. He worked for the Frick Coke Company for 45 years. Whether for that job or another, he purchased a pistol that shot lead bullets. It remains a family heirloom. The couple lived in various locales in Fayette County, including Lemont Furnace, Leisenring and Uniontown. A West Penn receipt shows he paid a $5 deposit to have electric service started in 1928 in Lemont Furnace. While working at Frick, he met John Mills, Addie's father. Elijah's wife, Sara, had died six years earlier, leaving him with three boys to raise. Although unmarried, Addie had given birth to a son, James. An arrangement was made for Addie to become Elijah's housekeeper. They married about a year later. Addie's son took the Murray surname. Elijah and Addie eventually had 10 children of their own. The couple lost several children to the ravages of disease. The deaths of Helen Louise, who died of diphtheria, and Jess Edgar, who died of either diphtheria or rheumatic fever, hit the couple especially hard. The Murray boys - George, Norman and Milton - fought in WWII. Their names are inscribed on a bronze plaque at the Dunbar Honor Roll. James and Kenneth fought in WWII as well. Elijah was living with Addie in Dunbar when he died on April 27, 1943. His last illness was brief and his death unexpected. World War II was still raging. His three oldest boys did not make it back to Dunbar in time to see him before he died. After Elijah's death, Addie worked at the Renze Cigar Factory. In the 1930s, the Renze Cigar Factory was one of two cigar firms in Fayette County. Located on Eighth Street in Connellsville, Renze's employed 13 people in 1935 and, by 1941, had a work force of 28. Addie continued living in the house on Speers Hill in Dunbar until she died. She attended the nearby Baptist Church. And she gardened in her spare time. Her children, George and Goldie, lived a few houses down the road. Norman lived on Bryson Hill, on the other side of Dunbar, until 1958, when he moved to Florida. Mary lived in Uniontown. James moved to Michigan. Milton moved to Ohio. In her later years, she doted on her grandchildren. She taught them how to play cards and bingo and told them stories of her youth. Addie Mills Murray died on April 4, 1965. Elijah and Addie share a double headstone in Normalville Cemetery. Elijah L. Murray Dies The funeral service for Elijah l. Murray of Dunbar, who died at Connellsville State Hospital Tuesday morning, will be held a 2 o'clock Friday afternoon at the home in charge of Rev. William S. Hamilton of Dunbar. Burial will be made in the United Brethren Cemetery at Normalville, in charge of Funeral Director Charles C. Mitchell. Mr. Murray was born at Normalville on December 26, 1864. He has been a lifelong resident of Fayette County and for the past eight years has resided on Second Street, Speers Hill, Dunbar. He was employed by the H.C. Frick Company for 45 years preceding his retirement. He was a member of the Normalville United Brethren Church. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Addie Murray of Dunbar, and the following children: Elmer H. of Lemont, John L. of Republic, James W., US Navy, Mrs. Mary Reninger of Uniontown, George, US Army, Mrs. Goldie Marnell of Dunbar, Norman, US Army and Milton of Dunbar. He is survived by his sister, Mrs. Ella Bailey of South Connellsville and 30 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by four daughters and three sons. - Connellsville Courier Addie Murray Dies Mrs. Addie Leona Rose Mills Murray, 77, of 19 Speers Hill, Dunbar, died at 2 p.m. Sunday, in Connellsville Hospital, after a brief illness. She was born Aug. 22, 1887, in Clear Spring, MD., a daughter of the late John and Mary Davis Mills, and had lived in Dunbar for the past 30 years. By WWII, James was a resident of Michigan, and presumably that is why his name is not on the plaque. Dunbar Honor Roll The Dunbar Honor Roll still stands at Woodvale Street. It was refurbished not long ago. Conceived by the Dunbar Victory Park Association, which organized in 1942, the War Memorial Honor Roll was intended to recognize the men of Dunbar who served their country in battle. Today the bronze markers include those who fought in Viet Nam. The memorial was design by J. Roy Carroll, Jr., a Philadelphia architect, who did not charge for his services. Most of the labor and materials were also donated. NORMAN AND MARION SHELLEY MURRAY Norman Murray, son of Elijah and Addie Mills Murray, was born January 7, 1923 in Lemont Furnace, Pa.
