We encourage links to the state and county table of contents. ------------------------------------------------------------- The deed conveying Samuel Lyon's land to Jonathan Hill reads as follows: To all people to whom the presents shall come, I Samuel Lyon of Union Township in the County of Fayette and State of Pennsylvania, Yeoman, do fond greeting whereas the Honorable the Proprietarus of the State of Pennsylvania by their Survey under the Seal of the Land Office of the said State or Province bearing date the thirteenth day of June One Thousand Seven Hundred and Sixty Nine and numbered three thousand four hundred and thirty eight did grant to be surveyed unto me three hundred acres of land on the west side of Laurel Hill joining the land of Jonathan Gess and Isaac Pearce on the fork of the road to Fort Pitt and Redstone--as by the said order of survey remaining in the Surveyor General's Office of the said state or province more fully appears. Now know ye that the said Samuel Lyon Senior for and in consideration of the sum of six hundred pounds lawful money of Pennsylvania aforepaid to me in hand, paid by the said Jonathan Hill the receipt whereof I hereby acknowledge, have granted, bargained, sold, released and confirmed and hereby do grant bargain, sell, release and confirm unto said Jonathan Hill his heirs and assigns all my estate right, title, interest, property claim and demand whatsoever of and to the said Location and Land thereby granted and surveyed or to be surveyed thereon together with all and singular the rights, members and appurtenances thereunto belonging or in anywise of right appertaining. Also all my estate, right, title, interest, property claim and demand whatsoever of and do a Warrant for fifty acres of land adjoining to the same granted to John Lyon part of which is already sold to John Murphy and to be distinguished by a conditional line made between me and my son Samuel Lyon [Jr.]. Also all my estate, right, title, interest, property claim and demand whatsoever of and to an improvement and quantity of land on the northeastward of the jurss? above described tract of land and adjacent to the same to have and to hold in fuid? sorral? treoniss? hereby granted with the appurtenances unto the said Johathan Hill his heirs and assigns to them--and their only use and behoaf? forever under and subject to the propreitaries or states and all other dues and demands to which the same are liable. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this twenty of the day of January in the year of our lord one thousand seven hundred and eighty five. Samuel (his mark) Lyon Sealed and Delivered in the presence of us- Charles Williams Jacob Downerd Fayette County - The Twenty Fifth Day of January Anno Domeni 1785 Before me the Subscriber one of the Justices of the Peace and of the Common Pleas for said County personally Samuel Lyon Senior the above named Grantor and Acknowledged the above written Deed Toll to be his act and deed and delivered the same to be recorded of such according to law - With my hand and seal the same day Alexander McClean Recorded and compared with the original 24th Day of June 1785 Fort Pitt is now Pittsburg, and Redstone is now Brownsville. Samuel Lyon obtained nearby land from Isaac Wood who settled it in 1753. It was located in the forks of the roads to Fort Pitt (later Pittsburg) and Redstone. That land was the object with a title controversy for many years with the Gist Family who finally prevailed. Samuel Lyon is recorded as living in Tyrone Township in 1772.
