Service. McCLEAN, ALEXANDER. June 4, 1833, ALEXANDER McCLEAN, 86 years old, a resident of Uniontown, Fayette Co., Pa., applied for pension and deposed: that Aug. 11, 1778 he was drafted as a militia man in Fayette Co. near Uniontown, to serve against the Indians under Capt. ISAAC PIERCE and Col. JOHN STEVENSON. He marched to Fort Pitt, then to Fort McIntosh where, through the influence of Col. CRAWFORD he was made commissary, which office he held from Sept. 15, 1778 to Dec. 15, 1778; that he received his appointment from Gen. McINTOSH. From Fort McIntosh he marched to Tuscarawa Nov. 4, 1778 and returned to Fort Pitt Dec. 15, 1778; was dismissed and returned home Dec. 24th having served 4 months and 13 days; that he received $40. a month in Continental money for his services as commissary; that in the summer of 1776 there was an alarm in his neighborhood and he volunteered to serve against the Indians from French Creek and the Kiskinmitas (?), and that he helped raise a company which was commanded by Capt. SAMUEL DAVIS. That he later volunteered to aid in getting troops out to the northern and western frontiers to defend the inhabitants against the Indians; served at least 5 months, making the whole of his service 9 months and 13 days; that the dates mentioned for the time he served as commissary were supplied from a book he kept which had been partially preserved. That during the three months he served as commissary, the following officers received supplies and munitions from him, viz:- THOMAS McCARTY - Quartermaster of Col. JOHN EVANS' battalion of militia from Monongalia and Ohio Counties; Capts. ANDREW SWEARANGEN, THOMAS BAY, JOHN CROW, ISAAC DYE, JOSEPH OGLE, JAMES WRIGHT, JACOB HAYMAKER, ISAAC PEARCE, JOHN MINTER, SAMUEL McKINZIE, A. R. CAMPBELL, D.M.M.G. (?); MABRAY EVANS, Capt.; JOSEPH BEELER, Lieut. Col.; JOHN MILAY, sergt.; BENJAMIN WHOLEY, ROBERT McCREADY, HUGH GARDNER, ARTHUR GORDON, Adjt.; SAMUEL SWINDLER, Qt. Adjt. (?); JOHN PHILIPS, Sergft; I. BERWICK, Judge Advocate; DAVID DEFARGE, Ensign; WILLIAM HENDERSON, etc.; that he was born Dec. 2, 1746, in Philadelphia Co., Pa.; that he lived when he went into service in Fayette Co., Pa. near where he now lives. CHARLES COOKE and ANDREW STEWART, both of Uniontown, Fayette Co., Pa. certified to veracity of ALEXANDER McCLEAN and their belief that he was a Revolutionary soldier. Claim allowed. July 22, 1837, A. STEWART of Uniontown, writes to J. L. EDWARDS, Commissioner of Pensions, for the purose of obtaining a copy of the pension record of ALEXANDER McCLEAN, that he may get a state pension for the widow. A letter from the Treasury Department dated Oct. 4, 1906 states that ALEXANDER McCLEAN's pension was paid to Jan. 7, 1834, date of death. Payment was made to JOSEPH McCLEAN as administrator, by Treasury Settlement, dated Nov. 12, 1846. Pensioner resided in Fayette Co., Pa. for fifty years before his death. Signed - ROBERT S.
