The place where the body was discovered lies probably half way between Fair- chance and Elliottsville in what is known as Conn's field or the "Second Meadows." By the side of the skeleton and about him were a pair of decayed shoes, a pair of eyeglasses an old revolver, much rusted, and a pit lamp. The body itself looked to have been in a state of decomposition of from two to three years. A few frag- ments of clothing still remained. Old residents recall that some three years ago Jake Byerley, well known Fairchance citizen, disap- peared from his home and was never seen or heard of since. His children and surviving members of the fam- ily were sent for in the hope that they could identify the remains from the eyeglasses, the shoes, revolver or pit lamp. In the meantime the skele- ton was placed on a slab in the mor- tuary of R. L. Sharp, Fairchance, where scores of the curious viewed it throughout the day. There was no evidence of violence about the remains, although time has so far obliterated matter that there was little left to tell the story from the grim skeleton. When Byerley wandered off, years ago, he apparent- ly was in good health and had no trouble that would lead to self de- struction. The body was found under a tree in a deep wooded section when dis- covered by Humphrey. He immedi- ately informed the authorities at Fairchance.
