It is a transcription of this photocopied original with no corrections to its spelling or punctuation. JONATHAN COWELL, 91, DIES IN GEDDES, S. D. News has been received here of the death of Jonathan Cowell, aged 91 years and 15 days, at his home in Geddes, S. D. Mr. Cowell has born in Fayette county where the Lafayette coke plant now stands on what was the original Cowell farm in Menallen township, November 9, 1836. He left the east in 1863 and after nearly a year in Illinois, moved on to the great wheat belt of the Northwest next spring. He crossed the Big Sioux river into South Dakota, March 8, 1864, when the stream was swollen with ice. Travel was by overland stages, horse and sleds, to railroads extending beyond Chicago. Mr. Cowell has one living brother in Fayette county, Smith Cowell of New Salem, and is survived by his widow and ten living children, nine of whom were at the bedside when he died Thanksgiving morning at __:55 o'clock. The funeral was in charge of the Masonic fraternity and was attended by hundreds of friends and neighbors. In addition he is survived by 35 grandchildren and seven great- grandchildren. His parents were the late Isaac and Sarah Cowell, members of one of Fayette county's pioneer settlers.
