CANDACE PRINKEY LISTON Atlantic Iowa News Telegraph, Monday, Feb. 21, 1938 PIONEER CASS COUNTY WOMAN TAKEN BY DEATH Mrs. Candace Liston of Cumberland Dies at the Age of 91. Was an Early Settler. Cumberland, Ia., Feb. 21.- (Special)--Mrs. Candace Pringey Liston, 91 the oldest resident of Cumberland, and a pioneer of Cass county, died Sunday morning at 6:45 o'clock. She had been bed-fast about six months. Death was attributed to complications due to her advanced years. A native of Pennsylvania, Mrs. Liston had resided in Cass county since 1869, when she came here with her husband to farm. Mr. Liston, a civil war veteran, died in 1890 and she lived alone here since. Being among the first settler in this county, she and Mr. Liston were instrumental in starting the present Newlon's Grove cemetery.She was also one of the group who helped to organize the Newlon's Grove Baptist church, where she was a member until moving to Cumberland to make her home. Her birthplace was Somerset county, Pa., and the date of her birth was April 6, 1846. She was one of seven children in the family of Joseph and Margaret Pringey. When still a small baby, the parents moved to Preston county, Va., and it was there she grew to womanhood and was married to Henson S. Liston on Oct. 2, 1864.They lived there until 1867 before moving to Muscatine county, Ia., where they farmed until the fall of 1869. That year they moved to Cass county and settled on 80 acres of wild prairie land in Noble township. Following Mr. Liston's death, she continued to live on the farm until 1895 when she moved into Cumberland, where she had since resided. Mr. and Mrs. Liston were the parents of nine children, eight of whom are living. They are Joseph B. and Frank M. Liston of Cumberland; Mrs. Jennie A. Connlly of Greenfield; John P. Liston of Omaha; Mrs. Blanche Scarr of Santa Monica, Cal.; Charles R. Liston of Adel and Glen Liston of Amarillo, Texas. One daughter Mrs. Luru M. Weir, died many years ago. There are 30 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services be held Tuesday at 2 p. m. in the Baptisit church in Cumberland with the Rev. J. A. Morse, pastor of the First Baptist church of Atlantic, officiating and burial will be in Newlon's Grove cemetery. Pallbearers will be grandsons of the deceased as follows: Ronald Liston of Cumberland, Charles R. Liston, Wayne Liston and Basil Weir, all of Atlantic; Joe Connlly and Willet Connlly of Greenfield
