Venerable Minister Died Friday at Daughter's Home. James H. Means son of Samuel Means and Catherene Shaffer Means, who died on Friday January 24, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Henry McLaughlin at West Newton, at the age of 86 years, was born near Johnstown April 24, 1824. He was married to Miss Sophia Murphy, daughter of Daniel and Margarite Murphy, in 1850, the latter having died in 1862. The following children survive; William C. Poplar Grove, Connellsville; Mrs. Mary Minerd, Connellsville Mrs. Eliza Dunham, Connellsville; Mrs. Catherine Crossland, Connellsville; Miss Sue Means, Pennsville Mrs Marguerita McLaughlin, West Newton. In the year 1862 he was again married to Miss Lucinda Morris, who died in the year 1911, no children being born to this union. The following brothers and sisters also survive; Mrs. Elizabeth Reese, Jones Mills; Mrs. Heneretta Richter, Thomas Means, Connellsville; William K. Means, Vanderbilt Funeral services were held at the home of Mrs. H. McLaughlin, Sunday, January 26 at 3:00 P.M. Interment in West Newton Cemetery. Mr. Means moved with his parents from Johnstown when they settled in Fayette County in the year 1834. He was educated in Fayette and Westmoreland counties. He was engaged at farming for 18 years on the William C. Johnston farm near Connellsville, where all his children were born; was converted to the Christian faith under the influence of the Rev. John Heckornell, an organizer of the Church of God, in the year 1866, when he became a minister of that denomination and served in that capacity for 48 years.
