D. James Burns Amberson, Sr., was born May 14, 1845, in Waynesboro, Franklin County, Pennsylvania, the son of William Smith and Rosanna (Burns) Amberson. Dr. Amberson received his education in the public and private schools of Waynesboro, at Mercersburg Academy, 1860-61, and was graduated from West Minister College, New Wilmington, Lawrence County, Pennsylvania, in 1865. He read medicine with Drs. Benjamin Frantz and I. N. Snively in Waynesboro, attended lectures at the University of Pennsylvania, during the sessions of 1865-66-67-68, and was graduated M. D. in 1868 from this university. Dr. Amberson was in the drug business, in Waynesboro, Pa., in connection with the practice of medicine from 1869 to 1876. He then was located in practice, 1877 to 1880, at Walnut Bottom, Cumberland County, Pa. In 1880 Dr. Amberson returned to Waynesboro, Pa., and has since been in active practice in this town. He was a charter member of the reorganized Medical Society in 1869 and is the only charter member now living, and in years of service, is the oldest physician in Franklin County. Dr. Amberson was president of the Medical Society in 1887 and is now chairman of the staff of the Waynesboro Hospital, an institution which he, through his interest and activity, helped to establish. He is a conscientious practitioner and enjoys the respect and confidence of a large clientele. He has always been a good student and is well informed in matters pertaining to the many recent advancements in medical science. Dr. Amberson married in 1873 Mary Katherine Good, daughter of David M., Sr., and Mary (Dietrich) Good. He has six living children, three sons and three daughters.
