D. 1837 - 1905 Dr. Bowman was born in 1837 in Cumberland County on a farm close to the Susquehanna River. He was the son of Benjamin and Annie (McQuade) Bowman. He received his education in the public schools and at White Hill Academy and then taught school for six years, the last year in Mechanicsburg, Pa. While teaching, he read medicine with Dr. Michael Freese of Mechanicsburg, and was graduated M. D., 1865, from New York Homoeopathic College, New York City. He located at once in Mechanicsburg in partnership with his preceptor and remained here for one year. He came to Chambersburg in July, 1867, and practiced medicine here until his death in 1905. Dr. Bowman married first in 1860, Margaret J. Nelson of Cumberland County, who died in 1862, and he married second, 1871, Annie Reid of Chambersburg, a daughter of Elihu D. and Elizabeth (Culbertson) Reid, and a granddaughter of Dr. S. D. Culbertson. Dr. Bowman belonged to the Masonic fraternity and was a member of the Falling Spring Presbyterian Church and is buried in the adjoining cemetery. As a man Dr. Bowman had the respect of the entire community and enjoyed an extensive and lucrative practice in Chambersburg and surrounding country.
