BOYLE, M.D. 1816 – 1878 Dr. Boyle was born 1816 on Rathlin Island off the north coast of Ireland, and in his infancy the family emigrated to America and lived successively at Upper Strasburg, Shippensburg and Chambersburg. The elder Boyle was a tailor and Willian served his full apprenticeship in this trade. Dr. Boyle began the study of medicine in 1836 with Dr. William Findlay and after the latter's death in 1837 he continued his studies with Dr. N. B. Lane. Dr. Boyle began the practice of medicine at Roxbury, Pa., but after a brief stay there located in Chambersburg in 1841 and continued here in active work until 1878 when he died. In recognition of his high professional character The Pennsylvania Medical College of Philadelphia, Pa., conferred upon him the honorary degree of M.D. He was a man of versatile talents and a remarkably fluent writer. In 1851 and 1852 he was editor of the Valley Sentinel, a democratic newspaper which was subsequently merged into the Valley Spirit. Dr. Boyle was a Charter Member of the Medical Society in 1869, its secretary 1869 to 1874, inclusive, and President in 1875. He was physician to the Almshouse in 1844, 1858 and 1869 to 1872.
