D. 1792-1867 James Brotherton was born in Antrim Township this county in 1792 a son of James and Jane (Henry) Brotherton. The former was a native born of Irish parentage, and the latter born in Cookstown, County Tyrone, Ireland. Dr. Brotherton read medicine with Dr. John Oellig in Waynesboro, and began the practice of medicine in this town about the year 1816. Dr. Brotherton received the degree M. D. from a Philadelphia Medical College. He was a prominent practitioner in Waynesboro and vicinity for many years. For some years prior to his death he was afflicted with paralysis agitans to such a degree that he had to have an attendant when he took exercise. It is said that this condition followed an infection of his finger caused by the prick of a needle while performing an autopsy. Dr. Brotherton married Helen Hammet. She was one of the first, if not the very first, in this county to have a breast amputated. This was done by Dr. John McClelland of Greencastle. She made a good recovery and never had a return of the trouble, and lived to a good age. Dr. James Brotherton, Jr., was a son.
