D. 1827-1885 R. S. Brownson was born in 1827 in Mercersburg, a son of John and Sarah (Smith) Brownson and a grandson of Dr. Richard Brownson. He received a classical education at Marshall College, Mercersburg, graduating in 1847, after which he studied medicine and was graduated M. D. in 1851 from the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Brownson began the practice of medicine at Beaver, Pa., but after a short stay he removed to Mercersburg where he followed the profession until the time of his death in 1885. During the Civil War he recruited Company C., 126th P. V. I. of which he was commissioned Captain in 1862 and in March, 1863, he was promoted to be a Major. He was a charter member of the Medical Society in 1869. His wife was Miss Mary Coyle.
