JOHN BUCK 1795-1853 Dr. John Buck lived somewhere in the vicinity of Shady Grove and practiced medicine not only in that neighborhood, but also over a wide scope of the country in the southern part of Franklin County. The extent of Dr. Buck's medical education is not known, but it is certain that his medical skill was not questioned by a very large number of patients and friends. His remains lie in a neglected graveyard on what was originally the Stover farm, now owned by George H. Stewart. This farm is about two miles northeast of Shady Grove and is the location of an old fort, the walls of which are still in evidence. The graveyard is upon a knoll about 300 yards south of the ruins of the fort and is a thicket of locust trees with no fence around and apparently has had no care or attention. If present conditions continue for a few years, all evidence of the presence of a graveyard here will have disappeared. His grave was marked by a substantial white marble stone which has fallen over and is now lying flat upon a grave and when found was covered with dirt and rubbish. The following is the inscription upon his gravestone: DR. JOHN BUCK Born May 15, 1795 Died November 27, 1853 Aged 58 yrs. 6 mos. 12 days My friends, I bid you all adieu, I leave you in God's care, And if I here no more see you, Go on, I'll meet you there.
