BUSHEY, M. D. 1840-1924 Franklin A. Bushey was born October 3, 1840, in Antrim Township, in the stone mansion house on the General Johnson farm. He was a son of Michael and Frances (Hornberger) Bushey. He was a student in medicine at the University of Maryland at the outbreak of the War of the Rebellion when he enlisted as a private in the Union Army. Later he became Assistant Surgeon of the 4th Pennsylvania Cavalry, and was in service throughout the war. After it terminated he was for some time in charge of a government hospital in Missouri. Dr. Bushey was a charter member of Corporal Rihl Post, G. A. R., and always was active in its affairs and devoted to the best interests of Veterans, practically all of whom living in the county, he knew by name and could recall their service. He served for many years as head of the U. S. Pension Examining Board in this county. Dr. Bushey located in Greencastle and continued in general practice of Medicine in this town and vicinity from 1865 to the time of his death in 1924, excepting a brief period spent in a responsible position with the U. S. Internal Bureau, Washington, D. C. His earlier professional affiliations were with Dr. Adam Carl and his son Dr. George D. Carl. His later years were spent largely as a consultant, in which capacity his experience was in much demand. Dr. Bushey was active in the organization of the Citizens National Bank of Greencastle, and served as Director of same until his death. He was a connoisseur in the collection and preservation of historical data, souvenirs, and traditions of Franklin County. He was a graceful writer and his contributions to local history, published in the local press and read before various societies are invaluable and most interesting. Dr. Bushey married December 27, 1865, Mary Ellen Carl, daughter of Dr. Adam Carl of Greencastle. Two daughters now survive, Mrs. Alice C. Grimes, Greencastle, Pa., and Mrs. Bertha Birely, Thurmont, Md.
