D. 1800-1891 Adam Carl was born at Hanover, York County, a son of George and Catherine (Diller) Carl. He became a student with Dr. J. H. Miller, Professor of the Theory and Practice of Medicine in Washington Medical College, Baltimore, and was graduated M. D. in 1829 by this institution. Dr. Carl first came to Greencastle in 1825 and opened a drug store. The same year he married Catherine Michaels of Hanover, York County. Dr. Carl practiced medicine continuously in Greencastle for sixty-two years. He was an officer in the Lutheran Church for more than fifty years. The day book of Adam Carl from the time he began business in 1825 is still in existence in the hands of his grandson, Charles Carl of Greencastle. The charges in this old book bear dates for the balance of 1825 and the greater part of 1826. The names of Dr. Boggs and Dr. Heatherington appear frequently throughout the book. The name of Dr. Samuel Duffield occurs at intervals through both years, as also does the name of Dr. George Felix or Falix. During November and December, 1825, there are several charges against Dr. D. Doster or Daster. There does not seem to be any available information regarding the last three named, other than the fact they were buying drugs in Greencastle at Carl's Drug Store in 1825 and 1826.
