SAMUEL CROFT 1836-1908 Dr. Croft was born in St. Thomas Township in 1836, the son of John and Martha (Wertz) Croft. He attended Gettysburg College in 1857 and 1858. After this he studied medicine and in 1863 attended one course of medical lectures at the University of Pennsylvania. He served in the army from August 1862 to May 1863. Dr. Croft began the practice of medicine in St. Thomas in 1864, remaining here in practice until 1868 when he retired to enter the Lutheran ministry and preached at various places until 1892, when failing health compelled him to relinquish active work. He spent the remaining years of his life at St. Thomas and in Chambersburg. His wife was Anna M. Embick.
