He was educated at Washington College, Washington, Pa., and then studied medicine with his father in Chambersburg. He received his degree of M.D. in 1836 from Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was a careful and close student during his school term, but never considered himself adapted to the profession of medicine and had no special enthusiasm for its theories or its practice. Shortly after receiving his degree he began the practice of medicine at Jackson, Miss., remaining there one year and then removing to Springfield, Ill. He practiced medicine there in partnership with Dr. Alexander Shields, who previously had practiced medicine in Chambersburg, Pa. After two years in Springfield he returned to Chambersburg and engaged in business pursuits. Dr. Culbertson entered into partnership with his father in the manufacture of straw boards. For a time he was in the grain and commission business and in 1873 was elected President of The National Bank of Chambersburg, which position he filled until the time of his death. Dr. Culbertson was a member and trustee of the Falling Spring Church, a trustee of the Chambersburg Academy, and active in its rebuilding, and held many other positions of trust in the industrial and business life of the town and County. In 1844 he married Ellen B. Kennedy, daughter of Hon. James J. Kennedy.
