H. Devor was born August 15, 1855, at Spring Run in Path Valley, a son of Amos M. and Margaret (Brinley) Devor and a great grandson of Joseph Devor, the immigrant who settled in Path Valley in 1795. Dr. Devor was educated in the common schools and attended the Cumberland Valley State Normal School at Shippensburg, graduating in 1880 from this school, after taking a three years' course. He taught for six years in the schools of St. Thomas, Montgomery and Metal Townships. His last teaching was in Mercersburg, where he was principal of the public schools. In 1882 he began the study of medicine with Dr. E. James Zook at Fannettsburg, Pa., and the next fall entered the College of Physicians and Surgeons in Baltimore, graduating M. D., 1885, from this institution. He located at once at Fort Loudon and was in active, successful practice in this vicinity until 1906, when he removed to Chambersburg and continued to practice here until his death in 1920. In 1895 he had a post- graduate course at the Polyclinic Hospital in Philadelphia, Pa. Dr. Devor was a member of the Medical Society and its President in 1899. He served for two consecutive terms as school director in Peters Township. He married, 1887, Ada B. Smith, daughter of John Smith of Ft. Loudon. He was a Republican in politics and a member of Zion Reformed Church.
