JOHN DUNCAN 1779 – 1851 Dr. Duncan was a physician, the son of Seth and Christina (Bedinger-Bittinger) Duncan. He lived at Duncan's Mill on the Falling Spring until late in life and then removed to Adams County, where he died. He amassed a large fortune for that period, amounting to about two hundred thousand dollars. He died unmarried. Duncan's Mill was later known as Smith's Mill. Seth Duncan, the father, was born in Scotland about 1724 and went from there to County Donegal, Ireland, then emigrated to America in 1750 and settled in Lancaster County, Pa. Later in life he removed to York County, now Adams County, locating at Abbotstown. Seth Duncan was twice married and Dr. John Duncan was the eldest son of the second marriage. Augustus Duncan, late of Chambersburg, was a nephew of Dr. Duncan. Tradition places a Dr. Duncan at Funkstown early in the century and there are some reasons for believing that Dr. John Duncan did practice medicine in that vicinity early in life and that he removed from there to Falling Spring.
