D. 1824-1907 Benjamin Frantz was born 1824 near Lititz, Lancaster County, Penna., the son of Christian and Anna (Frick) Frantz. He began the study of medicine with Drs. Martin and Jacob Musser of Lampeter, Lancaster County, the grandfather and uncle of Prof. John H. Musser of the University of Pennsylvania. In 1843 he was with the younger Dr. Musser at Bird-In-Hand, Lancaster County, and in 1844 studied with Dr. A. H. Senseny of Chambersburg. He then attended Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia, and was graduated M. D. in 1846 from this College. Dr. Frantz at once began the practice of medicine in Waynesboro and was in active practice in this town until his death. Dr. Frantz was a charter member of the Medical Society in 1869 and a member of the Waynesboro Medical Organizations. After the battle of Gettysburg in 1863, Dr. Frantz had charge of twenty-seven wounded Confederate soldiers in a school house at Ringgold. He was a man of more than ordinary ability, was an original thinker and a close reader. He was one of the first, if not the first, to use chloroform as an anaesthetic in this section. Dr. Frantz was a member of the Reformed Mennonite Church and was married in 1849 to Mary A. Ryder of Ft. Loudon, Pa.
