R. MELVILLE FRENCH Dr. French was born in Otsego County, N. Y., and had attended lectures at Medical College in Philadelphia and Baltimore before coming to Fayetteville. He practiced medicine in Fayetteville and vicinity for a number of years prior to his death about the year 1845. His death was due to an accident. The horse the doctor was either riding or driving ran away, throwing the doctor to the roadside with sufficient violence to cause his death. Dr. French was postmaster at Fayetteville from January 1837 to 1841 and was again appointed postmaster in 1845. In 1846 his widow, Mary A. French, was appointed postmistress and served until 1855. His wife was Mary Ann Peel of English extraction.
